Cal (1-0) vs. Washington (1-0) Game Preview
Why Cal Will Win
The defense is still the defense.
It gave up a touchdown early on in the 27-13 win over UC Davis after being put in a bad position, but it shut everything down the rest of the way. Of course, that was an FCS team, but it’s a good one. Don’t get hung up on the final score.
The Bear defense was able to stuff Washington in a 12-10 win last season, and it’s every bit as strong now with Evan Weaver leading another amazing front seven that’s going to be among the best in the country against the run.
Washington wasn’t pressured at all last week in the win over Eastern Washington, but that’s about to change. The Bears are going to get behind the line just enough to bother Jacob Eason.
The overall formula works. Grind it out with the running game, don’t make a slew of big mistakes, let the defense do the heavy lifting, and shorten the game. Washington will have no issues making this a slug-fest, and that plays into Cal’s style, but …
Why Washington Will Win
Get up early, and it’s over.
Cal didn’t have to open it up against UC Davis, but it should be a bit better pushing the ball down the field – Chase Garbers threw for 238 yards and two scores. It doesn’t have the weapons Washington has.
Jacob Eason did what he was supposed to do in the opener, completing 27-of-36 passes for 349 yards and four scores with no mistakes as the Huskies put the win over EWU away in the first quarter.
The receiving corps is more than fine, the running game has enough parts to use in a good rotation, and most of all, the offensive front could be the best in the conference. Cal will generate a little bit of pressure, but it won’t bring enough to screw up Eason. And …

What’s Going To Happen
The Washington defense is pretty good, too. It might still be putting in the new parts after losing a ton of starters, but it’s not going to let the Bear offense get into a consistent groove. Eason will have a few issues, but the Huskies will get up in the first half, and Cal won’t be able to grind its way over the hump. Expect too many stalled Bear drives.
