Cadbury to launch 'low calorie' chocolate as move divides opinion of shoppers

Cadbury has announced that it is set to make a major change to its iconic chocolate bars that might take some fans a while to accept.

The confectionary giant will now use plant-based fibres to develop new recipes for low-calorie chocolate that will contain 75 per cent less sugar and fat, reports the Sun. According to the brands US owners - Mondelez - the healthier chocolate will eventually taste just as good as the sugary version, even if it takes a while for it to really take off.

Dirk van de Put, Chief Executive at Mondelez, said: "It’s going to be a bit like diet drinks and grow very slowly, but we need to keep it on the market. It’s going to take a while before the consumer really takes to that because it still is not quite exactly the same taste — although it is getting close."

The Mondelez Executive also told the Sunday Telegraph that new tech and ingredients would help to get the taste right, following previous attempts to launch healthier chocolate.

It is the latest change that Cadbury has announced to its products, after it previously reducing the size of its big share bag of Dairy Milk Buttons. The popular chocolate shrunk from 240g to just 184.8g, with Cadbury citing rising production costs as the reason.

This is not the first time that Cadbury has dipped into creating healthier chocolate, as the UK brand has previously launched a low-calorie range at the start of this year.

The Cadbury Delights range, which contains just 91 calories per bar, is available to buy in three delicious flavours; salted caramel, hazelnut and orange & caramel.
