Cabin with portable toilet leaning on it dubbed 'worst polling station in UK'

What could well be the worst polling station in the UK has been laid bare.

With a handy portable toilet leaning next to it, the portable cabin has been set up on a small patch of grassland in the Huddersfield constituency.

Poky at best, ExaminerLive reports the metal cabin's little legs, which have been places on some of the sides, are probably the result of a review of polling stations by Kirklees Council earlier this year.

The review found the tiny polling station was "poor" and recommended staff should "investigate levelling of land".

Unfortunately the adjoining portable loo has not been given the same treatment. It is a lean-to loo with extra lean.

Anyone thinking of nipping in to relieve themselves after voting should first consider whether they have the required upper body strength to get back out again.

The temporary structure has been erected on the sloped, grassy corner of Lascelles Hall Road and Highfield Lane in the Lascelles Hall area.

Barry Sheerman of the Labour Co-operative Party has been Huddersfield's MP since 1983.

While most people will find themselves casting their vote in schools, community centres or places of worship, a few will find themselves marking their ballots in altogether weirder locations.

Among the most bizarre places are caravans, garages and the oldest football ground in the world.

Here's some of the most unusual places that have been used for polling stations in recent years...

1. A garage in Croydon

This north London polling station was set up in a residential garage.

Presumably the owner parks their car on the road on election day, or it might be a bit of a squeeze.

2. A Caravan

There's no rule that says a polling station has to be in a building.

It can be on four wheels, or even two, in this case.

3. The pub

This is more like it - voting in a pub is a refreshing change.

They probably won't be allowed to serve booze when polls open at 7am, though, which will probably help you to have a clear head when you mark your ballot.

4. A portable building

This mobile polling station in Biggin, England looks to be slightly bigger than a Portaloo, but smaller than one of those mobile classrooms they use while schools are being refurbished.

5. A launderette

Why not pop a wash on while you cast your vote? You could have the most productive day ever.

6. The living room of a grade II listed cottage

Lord Hannah of Pilcott always gets to vote first, because his local polling station is in his living room.

7. Another living room

This one belongs to Philomena Currid, and it's on the island of Inishfree, off the coast of Ireland.

8. A boxing gym

Ding ding! This polling station is in the East Hull Boxing Club.

And if there are any serious disagreements over who to vote for, the ring's right there.
