BENGALURU: A 40-year-old cabbie and his nine-year-old son died while his wife and two daughters sustained injuries when a tree fell on their moving car on the Mysuru-Bengaluru highway near Ramanagara on Monday.
The five-member family was returning to the city from Malavalli in Mandya district. The deceased are S Sudarshan and S Tanmay, residents of Channanayakanapalya near Nagasandra. S Sheela and her daughters S Ganavi, 10, and S Sanavi, 8, were shifted to Ramanagara government hospital. Sheela’s condition is critical while the two girls are out of danger, police said.
The accident occurred around 6am when the vehicle, a Maruti Omni, was passing Kumbapura gate. As the huge tree fell on it, Sudarshan and Tanmay, who were sitting in front, died instantly.
Passersby pulled out the injured and shifted them to the hospital. They also alerted police and fire department personnel. “Sudarshan and Tanmay’s bodies were stuck inside the vehicle and fire and emergency personnel had to cut open the doors to pull them out,” a police source said.
Traffic hit for half an hour
Traffic was disrupted for around 30 minutes as tree branches had fallen on the road. R Prameela, Sudarshan’s sister-in-law, told police that he had work in Bengaluru on Monday and left Malavalli around 4.30am.
