Businesses invited to set up stalls as food and drink markets come to Hamilton

Food and drink markets are coming to Hamilton town centre next month.

As lockdown restrictions continue to ease, residents across Lanarkshire will be able to attend the events which plan on running each Saturday in August.

Local businesses are invited to get involved to serve food and non-alcoholic beverages with the cost of the stalls covered by South Lanarkshire Council.

They will be set up on Quarry Street in Hamilton and will be open from 10am to 4pm every Saturday.

The event is being organised by Hamilton BID who aim to bring some buzz back to the town, increase footfall, and provide entertainment for locals.

Funding for the stalls will be provided through a project by both the council and SAC Consulting, so long as there is no conflict of interest with local businesses.

Manager of Hamilton BID, Malcolm Thomas-Harley, said: “We are aiming to support our local businesses through the creation of new and exciting town markets in August that will aim to drive footfall back into our town centre and into the businesses.

“We have teamed up with SHS stall hire who run markets across Scotland and Halo Arts to provide street theatre and family entertainment.

“What makes these markets special is the inclusion of many town centre businesses and local businesses onto the stalls.

“Alongside those businesses we are also looking to include small artisan South Lanarkshire businesses and producers onto the stalls to provide an additional quality product mix for our customers.”

Chair of South Lanarkshire Council’s community and enterprise resources committee, Councillor John Anderson, added: “This is an excellent opportunity for local food and non-alcoholic producers to showcase the huge array of goods that is available to us right on our doorstep.

“We recognise the impact that Covid-19 will have had on many of these businesses, but as the restrictions are beginning to ease, this type of event will hopefully help bring back some buzz and vibrancy to Hamilton town centre.”

Local businesses can find out how to apply for a stall on the Hamilton BID website, but firms are asked to get in touch as soon as possible due to the application process and various checks that need to be carried out beforehand.
