Business Brief (July 30): WTO Backs China in Turkey EV Tariff Dispute

The World Trade Organization (WTO) published a panel report Tuesday regarding China’s dispute over Turkey’s restrictions on electric vehicles and other vehicles, including additional tariffs. The panel supported China’s claims, ruling that Turkey’s measures violated WTO rules.

China welcomed the ruling and urged Turkey to correct the noncompliant measures as soon as possible, according to China’s Ministry of Commerce.

NEWS SUMMARY

China Unicom has been added to a U.S. list of entities deemed national security threats, following similar actions against China Telecom and China Mobile.

China’s domestic smartphone shipments stood at 19.1 million units in June, while 5G smartphone shipments dropped 12.1% year-on-year, according to the China Academy of Information and Communications Technology.

BMW plans to cut 8,000 jobs by the end of next year, according to German media.
