Bus, rail, DART and LUAS fares to drop by up to 20% for rest of the year as new prices announced

Public transport fares are set to drop by up to 20% as part of a new package to help with the cost of living crisis.

The cost of tickets on Dublin Bus, LUAS, DART and train services will all be reduced over the coming weeks.

From Monday, online fares for Irish Rail intercity services, as well as for Bus Eireann and TFI Local Link services, will reduce by 20%.

Fares for Dublin Bus, Go-Ahead Ireland, Luas, DART & Commuter Rail an all other Iarnród Eireann services will also reduce by up to 20% from May.

The reduction in fares will apply in addition to the previously announced introduction of Young Adult fares as part of Budget 2022, which will provide young people with an average 50% discount of equivalent adult fares.

Here's all you need to know:

Dublin Bus

  • The short adult Leap fare priced at €1.60 will be discounted to €1.30, enabling passengers to travel for less between 2km and 3km on all Dublin city bus services.

  • The introduction of the 90 minute adult Leap fare allows passengers to travel extensively across the Dublin city bus network, with the added benefit of free onward transfer within 90 minutes of initial tag on. t he introduction of a 20% discount on all PSO fares means that this fare will be reduced to €2.00 in 2022, offering significant value for bus passengers.

  • New Young Adult fares will be introduced on all Dublin city bus services on Leap only, comprising of single fares for short distance, 90 minute, Xpresso and Nitelink services. These are priced at approximately 50% of the equivalent adult fare. Additionally, these fares will also benefit from a 20% fares reduction in 2022, offering exceptionally good value for those passengers.

  • The Young Adult Leap 90 minute fare will be €1.00 which offers very significant value to customers.

  • All cash single fares (including Xpresso & Nitelink) and prepaid period products (e.g. Ramblers &Visitor tickets) will also be discounted by an average of 20%.

LUAS

  • The short adult Leap fare priced at €1.60 will be discounted to €1.30, enabling passengers to travel for less between 2km and 3km on Luas services.
  • The introduction of the 90 minute adult Leap fare allows passengers to travel extensively across the Luas network, with the added benefit of free onward transfer within 90 minutes of initial tag on. As outlined in November 2021, this fare will revert to the determined level of €2.50. However, the introduction of a 20% discount on all PSO fares means that this fare will be reduced to €2.00 in 2022, offering significant value for Luas passengers.
  • New Young Adult fares will be introduced on all Luas services on Leap only, comprising of a single fare for short distance trips, and a 90 minute fare for longer and multi-leg trips. These are priced at approximately 50% of the equivalent adult fare. Additionally, these fares will also benefit from the 20% fares reduction in 2022, offering exceptionally good value for passengers. The Young Adult Leap 90 minute fare will be €1.00 which offers very significant value to customers.
  • The recently introduced flat child Leap fare which allows all children to travel anywhere on the Luas network with the additional benefit of a free transfer to any mode within 90 minutes of initial tag on, will be discounted from 80 cent to just 65 cent in 2022.
  • All cash single, return and prepaid period product fares (e.g. 1, 7 and 30 Day tickets) will remain as zonal tickets but will also be discounted by an average of 20%. All Luas add-on tickets will also benefit from the 20% fares reduction in 2022.Monthly and annual Luas products (including multi-Operator tickets incorporating Luas) will also be discounted by 20% in 2022, offering improved value for passengers who travel more frequently. These products may be purchased under the Taxsaver scheme, offering significant savings for commuters.

Rail Services operated by Irish Rail

  • The short adult Leap fare priced at €1.60 will be discounted to €1.30, enabling passengers to travel for less between 2km and 3km on all Dart and commuter rail services in the Dublin area.
  • The introduction of the 90 minute adult Leap fare allows passengers to travel extensively on rail services within the Dublin SHZ, with the added benefit of free onward transfer within 90 minutes of initial tag on. As outlined in November 2021, this fare will revert to the determined level of €2.50. However, the introduction of a 20% discount on all PSO fares means that this fare will be reduced to €2.00 in 2022, offering significant value for rail passengers. The 90 minute fare will continue to apply within the 90 minute fare boundary (See Appendix M - Dublin 90 minute fare boundary).
  • Existing zones 5 & 6 journeys remain in the new Dublin fares structure for longer journeys, with associated fares also benefitting from the 20% fares reduction. Those choosing to purchase zones 5 or 6 single tickets on Leap will also be afforded free transfers within 90 minutes of initial tag on.
  • For consistency across the SHZ in Dublin, journeys between Greystones and the city centre (Pearse, Tara & Connolly) will be adjusted from zone 6 to zone 5, providing savings for passengers.
  • New Young Adult fares will be introduced on all rail services in Dublin on Leap only, comprising of single fares for short distance, 90 minute, zone 5 and zone 6 journeys. These are priced at approximately 50% of the equivalent adult fare. Additionally, these fares will also benefit from a 20% fares reduction in 2022, offering exceptionally good value for passengers. The Young Adult Leap 90 minute fare will be €1.00 which offers very significant value to customers.
  • The recently introduced flat child Leap fare which allows all children to travel anywhere on rail services within the SHZ with the additional benefit of a free transfer to any mode within 90 minutes of initial tag on, will be discounted from 80 cent to just 65 cent in 2022.
  • All cash single, return and prepaid period product fares (e.g. 1 & 7 Day tickets) will remain as zonal tickets but will also be discounted by an average of 20%.
  • Monthly and annual rail products (including multi-Operator tickets incorporating rail) will also be discounted by 20% in 2022, offering improved value for passengers who travel more frequently. These products may be purchased under the Taxsaver scheme, offering significant savings for commuters.
  • Mallow will be brought into the commuter rail fares area in Cork. This will see the addition of one new zone, with the introduction of Leap and cash fares to complement the existing ticket offering. This will mean that an adult may travel from Mallow to any station within the commuter area for just €3.90 when paying with Leap.
  • Cork commuter passengers will also benefit from the introduction of Young Adult fares on Leap, and in addition, all fares will see a reduction of 20% in 2022.
