Burst water mains causes 'huge sink hole' in field

A burst water mains pipe caused a hole to open up in a field near homes this morning.

Residents described seeing a 'huge sink hole' in land off Waterfold Lane, near Bury New Road, Bury, before several workers and diggers arrived.

United Utilities confirmed that the hole in the Heap Bridge field had come from a damaged 'water supply pipe', with workers set to be there for some time.

"We’ll continue to have a presence in the field near Waterfold Lane as this work is completed and we get the pipe back into use.
