Why Manchester City’s subdued win over Burnley may prove a misstep in nailbiting title race

Wednesday 22 April 2026 22:22 , Richard Jolly

It may be a familiar feeling for Arsenal, overhauled by Manchester City again in the run-in, just as they were three seasons ago.

After exactly 200 days at the summit, Arsenal have been knocked off it, if only until Saturday. For the first time since August, City are top. Burnley cemented the relegation that has been on the cards for them since August. City can time their surge to the top of the table to depress their rivals, and yet they did not have the air of an unstoppable juggernaut. They were separated from the demoted Clarets only by Erling Haaland’s 35th goal of the season and his second winner in four days.

This was City’s fifth consecutive victory but the least impressive of them. Their lack of ruthlessness could encourage Arsenal. They are now top on goals scored, but squandered a chance to go ahead on goal difference.

Premier League title race: Do Arsenal or Man City have the easier run-in?

The Premier League is set up for another thrilling run-in after Manchester City beat Burnley to move top of the Premier League on goals scored on Wednesday.

Pep Guardiola’s side beat Arsenal at the weekend to set up a fascinating last month of the title race, cutting the Gunners’ lead to just three points ahead of their trip to Turf Moor.

And an early goal from Erling Haaland was enough for the visitors to seal a 1-0 win and move top of the league, level with Arsenal on points and goal difference but ahead due to goals scored.

Burnley relegated from Premier League after home defeat to new leaders Manchester City

06:00 , Chris Wilson

Burnley have been relegated from the Premier League with four games to go after defeat at Turf Moor to Manchester City.

Scott Parker’s side needed a point against City to stave off relegation at least until the weekend, starting the day 13 points from safety with five games to go.

But they were condemned to the Championship thanks to Erling Haaland’s strike inside the first five minutes, and will join rock-bottom side Wolves - who had their demotion confirmed after a 3-0 loss to Leeds on Monday - in the second tier next season.

Why Chelsea had to sack Liam Rosenior and the true scale of the mess left behind

04:00 , Miguel Delaney

It’s the sort of story that always comes out when a manager goes, but actually tends to indicate doom long before then. Even weeks before Liam Rosenior left Chelsea - a decision eventually confirmed on Wednesday evening - some players couldn’t help indulging in some of the unfair commentary.

Sources say some comments surrounded Liam Rosenoir’s decision not to wear his glasses at the training ground. One or two even joked about whether it was to look tougher.

This fed into a huge reason why the 41-year-old has now gone, and why Chelsea now face up to an FA Cup semi-final with Calum McFarlane again a stand-in. Rosenior never had full authority over that dressing room, in a development that was all too predictable. A promising young coach just wasn’t ready for this job, at this time, as anyone could have told the hierarchy.

Why Chelsea had to sack Liam Rosenior and the true scale of the mess left behind

Far from the driver of Chelsea’s decline, Liam Rosenior is mere collateral damage of the disastrous BlueCo era

02:00 , Richard Jolly

So now Liam Rosenior’s LinkedIn profile requires updating. The manager given the cruel moniker of ‘LinkedIn Liam’ may struggle to spin a three-and-a-half month spell at Chelsea into a learning experience that leaves him ready for his next challenge. Rather, it must have been a horribly bruising experience. Rosenior did not even enter the last five years of his five-and-a-half year contract at Stamford Bridge. Though not the shortest managerial tenure in his family, after his father Leroy's 10 minutes in charge of Torquay in 2007, his 23-game reign gave him the shortest tenure of any supposedly permanent head coach in Chelsea history.

The risk is the permanent element is the harm done to Rosenior. Chelsea’s surrender at Brighton, coupled with their tactical incoherence as he switched to a 3-5-2 formation, amounted to an advertisement for change. His own verdict – “indefensible” and “unacceptable” – highlighted his inability to get a performance from his players. His team failed to make a tackle in the first half hour, went a fifth straight league game without scoring and, after being on course for Champions League qualification, could now get a bottom-half finish.

Liam Rosenior sacked by Chelsea three months into six-year contract

Thursday 23 April 2026 00:00 , Chris Wilson

Liam Rosenior has been sacked by Chelsea just three months after signing a six-year contract at the Premier League club.

Rosenior, 41, tore into his players following the 3-0 defeat to Brighton on Tuesday and said their performance was “indefensible”. The loss was Chelsea’s fifth in a row in the Premier League without scoring, making it the club’s worst run of league form in 114 years.

Calum McFarlane will take charge of the team as Interim Head Coach until the end of the season, starting with Sunday’s FA Cup semi-final against Leeds.

Man City stay silent on John Stones’ future amid summer exit rumours

Wednesday 22 April 2026 23:45 , Chris Wilson

Manchester City are remaining tight-lipped regarding the future of England defender John Stones, amid growing speculation that he is set to depart the club when his contract expires this summer.

The 31-year-old has enjoyed a trophy-laden spell since his 2016 move from Everton to the Etihad Stadium, accumulating an impressive haul that includes a Champions League title, two FA Cups, and six Premier League crowns.

Stones is hoping to secure a seventh league triumph with Pep Guardiola’s side before his anticipated exit.

Walker: 'What this club means to this town is incredible'

Wednesday 22 April 2026 22:52 , Chris Wilson

“What this club means to this town is incredible. You see a Burnley shirt whenever you drive into training, and it means a lot to them,” said Burnley defender Kyle Walker on Sky.

“From us to them, thank you for every bit of support this season, and hopefully we can do you proud come next season and get straight back into the big leagues, which is where I feel this club should be,” he added.

Haaland: 'Just try to win'

Wednesday 22 April 2026 22:48 , Chris Wilson

“We had a lot of chances, but I’m happy we win and that’s the most important thing. Anything else, don’t think, just try to win,” said Erling Haaland at full-time.

“As I said, it’s all about winning, no matter how, we try to play our football and just try to win. That’s what you have to have in your mind, and now we focus on Saturday,” he added.

Remaining fixtures

Wednesday 22 April 2026 22:43 , Chris Wilson

Here’s how the remaining fixtures look for City and Arsenal then:

More from Guardiola

Wednesday 22 April 2026 22:38 , Chris Wilson

On the feeling of being top, Guardiola adds: "Five games, it's the Premier League. Five games and now we have a semi-final on Saturday. Then we try to prepare the next games.

"It's a big opportunity to play four finals in a row. Maybe we have to make some changes. At the end we were a little bit tired but we are ready."

On when he can expect Rodri back, he says: "I don't know yet. Day by day we see."

Guardiola: 'We did everything'

Wednesday 22 April 2026 22:33 , Chris Wilson

“The chances were there. We created a lot. We did everything after a demanding game three days ago. It was demanding, it was not easy. We played a good game where we missed some goals,” said Pep Guardiola after the final whistle.

“I was not frustrated, why would I be? We won three points, we are top of the league. Of course we can do better but the guys did everything.

“We made a better performance in terms of chances than on Sunday. Arsenal are extraordinary, but the performance itself was really good,” he added.

FULL-TIME! Burnley 0-1 Man City

Wednesday 22 April 2026 22:01 , Chris Wilson

An early Erling Haaland strike was enough to take a tired Man City side to the top of the Premier League on goals scored as Pep Guardiola’s side beat Burnley at Turf Moor.

Rayan Cherki missed from close range early on but Haaland was sent through by Jeremy Doku before chipping the onrushing Dubravka to give his side the lead.

It looked like City might run riot from there but the visitors were somewhat disjointed in attack as Burnley dug deep to defend, and while the hopsts were limited to half-chances for the majority of the game, Guardiola’s men weren’t able to seize the chance to further improve their goal difference.

Nevertheless, all you have to do is win in these circumstances, and City dug out the victory despite an average performance, with Guardiola’s men moving top of the Premier League on goals scored as Burnley’s relegation was confirmed.

A lovely finish from a Doku through ball means City are a goal ahead and as things stand they’re top of the league on goals scored.

Meanwhile, Burnley are heading down if they can’t get anything from this game, and there’s a feeling of resignation around the ground at the moment.

Almost a dream start for City as space opens up in front of Silva and he dibbles into it. He tries to angle a shot at goal but it’s blocked by a flying challenge.

Here’s the latest from Richard Jolly, who’s in place at Turf Moor this evening:

Manchester City can go top for the first time since August. Burnley can go down, which has looked likely since August.

“Pep Guardiola makes one change, but not quite the one expected. We knew Rodri was out, expected Nico Gonzalez to come in but instead Rayan Ait-Nouri does, with Nico O'Reilly moving into midfield.

“Kyle Walker, a title-winning City captain, captains Burnley against City.”

“Burnley have presented a medal to Trevor Meredith who scored the goal that made them champions of England in 1960, but played too few games that season to earn him one at the time.”

Guardiola: 'We can try and equalise'

Wednesday 22 April 2026 19:49 , Chris Wilson

Pep Guardiola has also spoken to Sky ahead of kick-off.

“To arrive in April, sometimes you have to be good in the past. Making April good doesn’t mean [much], but right now Arsenal have been better so far.

“But today we can try and equalise, go onto the same points, and that’s what we have to do,” he adds.

'We want to win'

“We’ve come with good energy today, and we want to win,” says Antoine Semenyo ahead of kick-off on Sky.

“Every game is a final for us now, so the expectation is to come here and try and win. Obviously it’s going to be difficult, but it’s game by game,” he adds.

Liam Rosenior sacked by Chelsea three months into six-year contract

Wednesday 22 April 2026 19:39 , Chris Wilson

Some big news from elsewhere in the Premier League...

Antoine Semenyo has scored in each of his three league games against Burnley, including once already this season for Bournemouth.

Meanwhile, Erling Haaland has scored seven goals in just four appearances against the Clarets in all competitions.

Scott Parker says prospect of Burnley relegation has weighed heavily for months

Wednesday 22 April 2026 19:22 , Chris Wilson

Burnley could see their relegation from the Premier League confirmed after Wednesday night’s clash against title-chasing Manchester City, but manager Scott Parker admits the prospect has been weighing heavily for months.

All eyes will turn to Turf Moor for a game that could see City replace Arsenal at the top of the table, but the stakes are just as high for the Clarets.

Defeat against Pep Guardiola’s powerhouses would guarantee a return to the Championship, a year on from their 100-point promotion in Parker’s first season.

Why Bernardo Silva deserves to be player of the year after last dance at Man City

Wednesday 22 April 2026 19:10 , Richard Jolly

Rayan Cherki had added a goal in the biggest game of the Premier League season to a pair of assists at Stamford Bridge last week. The maverick with the magical touch has shown a productivity. He has a showman’s trickery but he has also made the second most goals in the top flight. He can be framed as the difference-maker, in part because, in a division dominated by set-pieces, few have his creativity in open play, or his joie de vivre.

And yet when Pep Guardiola was asked if his bargain of a signing should be named player of the year, he scoffed. “Come, come,” he said. “He’s so young.” If Guardiola had a vote, either for the PFA or Football Writers’ Association awards, it is safe to say it would be cast for Bernardo Silva. Not just this season, either, as Silva is his man for all seasons. He is his favourite.

Manchester City’s 2-1 win over Arsenal underlined why. It had a certain similarity with what may prove the other most significant result of their Premier League campaign. When they beat Liverpool 2-1 at Anfield, Silva was the best player on the pitch. Ten weeks later, some 30 miles further east, the scoreline was the same. So, too, was the significance of Silva.

Josh Cullen and Connor Roberts remain absent for Burnley due to knee and calf injuries respectively, with Parker hopeful of retaining his side who faced Forest on Sunday.

Man City’s star midfielder Rodri limped off in the closing stages of the win against Arsenal on Sunday with a groin injury and, if not match-fit, Nico Gonzalez could deputise. Otherwise, Pep Guardiola is likely to continue with an in-form starting XI.

Manchester City face a significant challenge ahead of Wednesday's Premier League clash against Burnley, with midfielder Rodri expected to miss out and centre-back Ruben Dias remaining sidelined.

Pep Guardiola confirmed the double injury blow as his side bids to chase down league leaders Arsenal.

Rodri sustained his injury late in Sunday's 2-1 victory over Arsenal at the Etihad Stadium. Guardiola indicated the 29-year-old Spain international's issue appeared to be groin-related.

City have scored five or more goals in five different Premier League games against Burnley. No side has done so more often against another in the history of the competition.

Pep Guardiola hits back at Wayne Rooney’s ‘stupid’ criticism of Man City celebrations

Wednesday 22 April 2026 18:18 , Chris Wilson

Pep Guardiola has defended his Manchester City players against Wayne Rooney’s "stupid" criticism of their post-match celebrations following Sunday's victory over Arsenal.

City will go to Burnley on Wednesday night with the opportunity to go top of the Premier League after beating the Gunners 2-1 in what was effectively a “must-win” game to keep themselves in the title race.

There were exuberant scenes at the final whistle - Gianluigi Donnarumma leapt into the crowd behind his goal and supporters unfurled a banner which read 'Panic on the streets of London', quoting The Smiths, as Arsenal feel the pressure.

What the managers have said

Wednesday 22 April 2026 18:12 , Chris Wilson

“We talked immediately after the game, do not lose the focus. Arsenal is top of the league and right now they would be the champions,” said Pep Guardiola in his pre-match press conference.

“The recovery is much less than the last two weeks. It's just two days. That is why I have to see how people are recovering. It's a demanding game we had, both emotionally and physically.

“But at the same time, we have six games left. We know exactly what is going to happen, when we get the result or if we don't get the result,” explained the Catalan.

“Both teams [City & Arsenal] know what happened in the past. Both teams know they cannot lose or drop points. It will be difficult to recover. And our calendar is so demanding, especially when we have a game coming up against an opponent [Everton] that is really, really tough,” he added.

What have the managers said?

Wednesday 22 April 2026 18:06 , Chris Wilson

“Having an understanding of where we are and searching for something - I don't think that's a big player in terms of us,” said Burnley boss Scott Parker in his pre-match conference.

“That has been a challenge over the last few months because we haven't managed to pick up results. That burden has been on our shoulders for a long time now. That's where we are.

“It comes down to what the players want as individuals. From my side, as always the driver will be that there are certain things you can control. There are certain traits and habits you can control.

“Not getting a result or the outcome of a performance sometimes you can accept when you fall a little bit short due to many reasons, but one thing you can never fall short on is what you are in control of. That has to be a mainstay and that will be the message,” added the former England midfielder.
