New Labour leader Andy Burnham has pledged to bring the “extra joy” of pints and holidays back into people’s lives.
Burnham, who has been criticised for avoiding serious questioning in the run-up to his coronation, spoke to Gary Lineker on the Goalhanger podcast, recounting conversations he had with voters while canvassing.
The Makerfield MP said he had spoken to locals who told him they were struggling to “go out for a few pints”, go on holiday or take their children out.
“ Some of the things that just brought that bit of extra joy to people's lives have kind of disappeared,” said Burnham.
“ We just need to work to try and bring a bit of a lift to people, a greater sense of hope back.”
