Burger King set for historic Glasgow city centre building as fast food plans emerge

Glasgow city centre looks set for a new Burger King in an iconic city centre building, under new plans.

The council are currently considering an application for illuminated Burger King signage to be erected at Charing Cross Mansions on St George's Road, by the M8 motorway, which formerly housed Starbucks.

Glasgow City Council previously gave the green light to proposals for the use of the former bank premises as a restaurant with takeaway facilities and for internal alterations at the property.

In a planning statement submitted to the council in November 2021, it's stated: "It is anticipated that the operating hours will be 8am - 4am seven days a week which would provide parity with similar outlets in the local area and wider city centre, though the applicant would be willing to consider alternative hours.

"The nightclub market and the late night reveller is now seeking more substantial fare than was available twenty years ago and again this need has been recognised by the majority of outlets in the city providing a fuller and more comprehensive range of meals."

Burger King's previous city centre venue in Sauchiehall Street closed down and was replaced by Filipino fast food restaurant Jollibee earlier this year. There is also a Burger King venue with Glasgow Central Station, in Buchanan Galleries and at the St Enoch Centre.

Glasgow Live have contacted Burger King for additional comment.

The signage application, which you can view in full here, is currently being considering by Glasgow City Council.
