The future of the Destiny franchise is once again in jeopardy. Next month’s Monument of Triumph is Destiny 2‘s final update, and it’ll be followed by another wave of layoffs and no sequel, according to a Bloomberg report.
The studio officially announced Destiny 2‘s swan song today, promising one gargantuan, dignified update. Among the studio’s next move, however, is a wave of layoffs and more focus on a flailing Marathon, as per Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier.
“The company doesn’t have a new project lined up for Destiny 2’s development team after the game comes to an end next month,” according to the report. The studio has no plans to “immediately enter production” on a Destiny 3, Schreier adds, so any hope of seeing the sequel is years and years away.
In the meantime, developers have pitched and attempted to develop other projects, related to Destiny 2 or not, but “but none have been greenlit and there’s no guarantee that any will move forward,” the report says.
Instead, Bungie is doubling down on a flailing Marathon that hasn’t fully found its stride. The studio teased changes coming to the game with its next season—in stark contrast to the silence that permeated Destiny since Renegades in December—in hopes it will find a niche. Extraction shooters don’t exactly have a universal appeal, however, and even Arc Raiders seems to be like lightning in a bottle.
It’s not a surprise that Bungie, a studio that’s laid off employees even after a good expansion, has plans to axe more of its workforce after a downturn so severe it’s hard to put into words. Realistically, even if Destiny 3 entered production today, it would take years before fans could get their hands on it, so the franchise’s future, for now, is in Stasis—and that’s as optimistically as anyone can put it.
