'Bullet dodged' - Arsenal fans say the same thing as Markus Schubert has horror show vs Dortmund

Arsenal were heavily linked with a move for Markus Schubert last summer.

And the Gunners supporters are now thankful a move did not come to fruition.

The young shot-stopper was linked with a free transfer to the Emirates after his Dynamo Dresden contract expired at the end of last season, but he eventually made the move to Schalke instead.,

Bayern Munich and Stuttgart were also credited with an interest.

Upon signing for Shcalke, Schubert said: "I am absolutely convinced that I can take my next steps here and made my decision from many requests very consciously met.

"I had great discussions with the people in charge, as well as goalkeeping coach Simon Henzler who shared his ideas about goalkeeper training."

The Bundesliga season has returned today, with a full list of fixtures and it looks as if the youngster may be a little rusty.

He is young and playing in a position that highlights errors and he has made a pretty big one on the return to action following the coronavirus crisis.

In the big derby clash with Borussia Dortmund at the Westfalonstadion, Schalke were already 1-0 behind when Schubert made a hash of a clearance and the ball was fed into Raphael Guerrero to slot past him for 2-0 at the break.

It left Arsenal fans breathing a sigh of relief.

Of course mistakes will always be made, particularly as a goalkeeper.

And it may turn out that Arsenal will rue not getting him through the door last summer in the long run.

But for now, they seem quite pleased he did not sign, particularly given he hardly covered himself in any glory for Dortmund's third goal either, seeing Thorgan Hazard's shot fly past him.
