Budget supermarket owned by B&M that's full of bargains

Many families are trying their best to save money wherever they can due to the cost of living crisis, including their weekly food shops.

Thankfully, Britain’s high streets have a fair few budget stores offering cheaper alternatives, including Poundland, Home Bargains and B&M. There’s also a lesser known supermarket out there that offers great bargains on food and drink, but some people may not think to do their weekly shop there.

Heron Foods originally started as a butchers before changing its name and opening its first Heron Frozen Foods store in 1979. In 2017, B&M took over the supermarket and now there are 250 stores, including one on Myrtle Street in Liverpool and one in Birkenhead, Wirral.

Heron Foods sells a variety of goods, including fruit and veg, cupboard staples and frozen food. The MEN’s Parents Editor, Emma Gill, visited her local store in Wigan to find out just how cheap the products were.

Emma discovered that while not everything she bought was cheaper than other supermarkets, some items were cheaper with multibuy - like the two packs of Bird's Eye Crispy Chicken for £2.50. She found that prices “generally seemed low across the board”.

It was the 'Best Buy Now' offers on individual items at Heron Foods that stood out to her. A four-pack of Muller Light Greek Yoghurts cost 89p, Belvita biscuits were £1 and a 754g bottle of Hellman's Squeezy Mayonnaise cost £2.

Emma found drinks were cheap too, with a 1.25l bottle of Pepsi Max Lime priced just 79p and a 1-litre bottle of Robinson's double strength blackcurrant cost £1. She reported that “the same cordial costs £2.25 in Tesco and even under Asda's multibuy offer, still works out more expensive at two bottles for £3”.

The supermarket’s XSELL frozen food brand had a 1.5kg bag of waffles for £1.75, and a pack of 10 Young's fish fingers cost £1. Heron Foods also sells “wonky stock”, including a 907g pack of “bacon misshapes” for £1.49 and a 500g pack of broken and misshapen biscuits which costs 69p.

In total, Emma spent just over £50 on her Heron Foods shop which included over 40 items. You can find your nearest Heron Foods store here.
