Budget 2022: Covid-19 wage support scheme support payments continue into next year

Budget 2022 is set to be revealed tomorrow with a number of supports for key industries such as the pub and nightclub sector.

One of the hardest-hit industries during the pandemic has been pubs and nightclubs, with the latter only set to reopen on October 22.

It's expected that a €100 million budget for the hospitality and tourism sector will be announced by Minister for Finance Paschal Donohoe and Minister for Public Expenditure Michael McGrath.

These supports will come in the shape of continued wage supplements for hospitality while other industries will see their supports tapered off starting in January 2022.

Over €4.7 billion in extra measures is set to be made available with increases to social welfare, winter fuel allowance and the pension set to take up the vast majority of that amount.

The VAT rate of 9% that has applied to the tourism sector has been extended until August 2022.

Other measures that will make the cost of living easier on the population includes a tax break to help those who are working from home with utility bills like heating and broadband.

There has previously been a grant that would pay 10% of the bill for remote workers but that has been confirmed to be increased to 30%.

Petrol and diesel will also be increased and is an easy way for the Government to raise money for the exchequer.

Cigarettes may see an increase of 50 cents but Revenue has warned that any further increase may encourage people to source tobacco products from outside the state.
