Bruno Guimaraes selects Newcastle shirt number 39 in tribute to taxi driver father

Bruno Guimaraes' decision to wear the number 39 shirt for Newcastle United is a heartwarming tribute to his father.

The 24-year-old has completed his £33million transfer from French giants Lyon and becomes their biggest signing since the Magpies' Saudi Arabian-backed takeover after putting pen to paper on a four-and-a-half-year contract.

But behind the eye-watering financial details of the deal - with Guimaraes' wages reportedly worth £120,000-a-week - the Brazil international has chosen his shirt number as a tribute to his father, who is a taxi driver in Rio.

39 is the number of father Dick's taxi and Guimaraes will continue his tribute while wearing the famous black and white.

The midfielder will link with up Newcastle after the international break, having completed his medical 5,739 miles from where he will now be playing his football, St James' Park.

Despite the Magpies' riches, the move came as a shock due to Guimaraes being one of the best players in his position across Europe's top-five leagues this season.

After developing a cult following among the analytics community, he was linked with Arsenal and Manchester United, only for Eddie Howe and co to swoop in the final days of the January transfer window.

Howe was delighted with the deal, telling nufc.com : "Bruno is a hugely exciting talent and has been one of our primary targets so I'm delighted to secure him. He strengthens the group immediately ready for the challenge ahead.

"He has been one of the standout performers in France and is a full international for Brazil so I have no doubt our supporters will really enjoy watching him. We look forward to welcoming him to the club on his return from international duty."

Guimaraes thanked his former club shortly after the transfer was confirmed, tweeting: "Thank you Lyon! My sincere thanks and see you soon!"

He is in line to make his Newcastle debut against Everton on Tuesday, February 8.

The club's fourth signing of the month is set to be Brighton & Hove Albion defender Dan Burn, who is a boyhood Magpie.

Whilst his team were in Saudi Arabia for a warm-weather training camp during the Premier League winter break, Howe gave supporters a promising update on further business before Monday's 11pm deadline.

"Things change very late into the window as everyone knows," he explained.

"It can be quite unpredictable, the last couple of days, with lots of different things happening that maybe you didn't expect so we're open."
