Bruce Allen says Redskins don’t have to take a QB in first round

On paper, it looks like the Washington Redskins should take a quarterback in the first round of the 2019 NFL draft.

Just don’t tell team president Bruce Allen.

In an interview with NBC Sports Washington, Allen tried to temper fan expectations about such a move:

But this conversation comes up naturally because a report broke saying Alex Smith won’t be able to play in 2019. It is the expected outcome after the severity of his injury, but still interesting to see the news finally come out.

If the Redskins don’t make a move, they would be stuck with Colt McCoy and Josh Johnson, as the front office wants to re-sign the latter.

Fifteenth overall could present some interesting opportunities for the Redskins, though. Dwayne Haskins, Kyler Murray, Drew Lock, Daniel Jones and perhaps Will Grier are names who could come off the board in the first round and one of them could fall to Washington’s pick.

So while Allen saying the Redskins don’t have to make that sort of move sounds good — it’s exactly what a front office considering doing so would say publicly.

Smokescreen season, as they say, has come early this year thanks to the poor state of the Redskins quarterback room.
