Browns are extremely unlikely to use franchise or transition tags

The first day for NFL teams to designate players who will get the franchise or transition tag is Tuesday, Feb. 19. Don’t expect any activity from the Cleveland Browns on this front, however.

The Browns do not have any pending unrestricted free agents who are worthy of getting such a lofty contract status. The most notable 2018 Browns who will be unrestricted free agents are left tackle Greg Robinson, backup QB Tyrod Taylor, cornerback E.J. Gaines and wide receiver Breshad Perriman.

Browns GM John Dorsey should have some interest in bringing back Gaines, Perriman and Robinson if the price is right. But that price is not anywhere close to the franchise or transition tag values, even with the Browns awash in salary cap room.

Using the franchise tag on Robinson would cost $15.3 million, while the transition tag value is $13.7 million. For Perriman, the WR tag values are $17.1 and $14.7 million, respectively. Even their agents would have a hard time selling themselves on the players being valued close to those figures.
