Brothers of Irish journalist killed in Ukraine pay emotional tribute on RTE's Claire Byrne

The brothers of an Irish journalist who was killed during a Russian attack in Ukraine have paid tribute to their "brave, wonderful" sibling.

Pierre Zakrzewski was killed after artillery shelling broke out in the north-eastern part of the village of Gorenka on Monday.

Pierre was an accomplished warzone journalist, covering other areas of conflict such as Iraq, Afghanistan, and Syria.

He and two other journalists were involved in the incident, with producer Oleksandra 'Sasha' Kuvshynova also passing away.

Nick and Greg Zakrzewski told Today with Claire Byrne that their brother was a "free spirit" who was "adored by everyone".

Nick said efforts are being made to repatriate his brothers body home and the Department of Foreign Affairs and Fox News are coordinating efforts to make this happen.

He said his brother was driven by travel and a real love of photography which then evolved into videography.

After leaving college, Nick explained, Pierre "travelled and travelled and travelled', noting that the family all thought that this was "spectacular".

His other brother, Greg, told Claire that the family is "on autopilot", describing Pierre as “the one they all look up to. It wasn’t the job. He’s a free spirit, that’s what’s so attractive about him.”

The brothers told Claire that Pierre always helped people in the areas where he was working, including helping people through checkpoints in Afghanistan, and that he was immensely proud of being Irish, telling anyone who questioned him that he was born and bred in Dublin and to let him through.

He was always good at keeping in touch with the family, Greg added, always reassuring them about his safety - even if he couldn't tell them exactly where he was, giving the example of the recent attacks on Sky News in Ukraine.
