Brookvale Oval given green light to host Sea Eagles and Sharks clash after asbestos scare

Saturday's NRL elimination final between the Manly Sea Eagles and Cronulla Sharks will be played at Brookvale Oval, despite asbestos being found at Manly's home ground.

The toxic substance was detected on Friday and further testing of Brookvale Oval — known as Lottoland — was carried out today.

The NRL said the owner of the ground, the Northern Beaches Council, guaranteed there was no risk to public safety.

A small area on the hill that was found to be contaminated will be managed by being covering with synthetic turf.

NRL chief executive Todd Greenberg said the safety of players and the public was a priority.

"Council has shown us a detailed plan which removes all risk and ensures no threat to public safety," he said.

"On that basis we have granted approval for the match to remain at Lottoland," he said.

Manly players were only told about the contamination on Friday.

Fullback Brendan Elliot said news of the contamination has been "pretty shocking".

Coming off back-to-back losses heading into the finals, lock Jake Trbojevic said the players had been desperate to keep their home ground advantage.

"Of course it would [have been] disappointing to lose it, we love to play there, we get a lot of people turn up each week to watch us play there, it's a great atmosphere."

Brookvale has long caused headaches for the club.

Just last week the NRL threatened to strip Brookvale Oval of the right to host a final because of security concerns, after a Sea Eagles fan lashed out at Melbourne's Will Chambers in the stadiums' tunnel.

The playing surface has also been blamed for causing injuries to players and poor crowds last year resulted in the relocation of games.

Tickets to Saturday's game were withheld pending the investigation, but will go on sale tomorrow morning.

Sea Eagles prop Martin Taupau will miss the match after being suspended for a careless high tackle.
