Broncos will face Paxton Lynch in Week 1 of NFL preseason

The Broncos will face quarterback Paxton Lynch — their first-round selection in the 2016 NFL draft — when they take on the Seahawks in Week 1 of NFL preseason on Thursday evening.

Lynch failed to beat out seventh-round draft pick Trevor Siemian as a rookie but still played in three games while Siemian was injured. He posted a 79.2 quarterback rating in those three contests.

In 2017, Lynch got another chance to beat out Siemian at camp and failed again. He was a fill-in starter for two games that season and posted a 72.0 quarterback rating. He threw four touchdown passes and four interceptions during his five appearances from 2016-2017.

Last summer, Chad Kelly beat out Lynch for the backup job and Lynch lost his roster spot when the team signed veteran Kevin Hogan. Lynch then spent the 2018 season without a team. He signed with the Seahawks in January and will compete for their backup job during preseason.

In Seattle, the fresh start hasn’t helped Lynch turn a corner in his career, at least not so far.

Last week, Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson missed practice to attend his grandfather’s funeral, giving backups Geno Smith and Lynch a chance to impress with the first-team offense.

Neither QB played well, but Smith looked better than Lynch.
