Broncos undrafted rookie spotlight: Trinity Benson

Following the 2019 NFL draft, the Denver Broncos signed a handful of undrafted free agents. However, when it comes to those players, fans often see nothing more than a name.

Our undrafted rookie spotlight series continues this year and the first name on the docket is Trinity Benson. Let’s find out a little bit more about him.

Name: Trinity Benson

Position: Wide receiver

Height: 6-0

Weight: 180

Age: 22

College: East Central

If you’re wondering where East Central University is, don’t feel bad. The school is located in Ada, Oklahoma and the football team competes in the Great American Conference of NCAA Division II. While it’s far from a football factory, the school has churned out some NFL players including current Seattle Seahawks wide receiver David Moore, former Cleveland Browns defensive end Armonty Bryant and former New York Jets defensive end Mark Gastineau.

At his pro day, Benson recorded a 4.44 40-yard dash and a 40.5-inch vertical leap. Looking at this chart of official pro day results, only seven prospects had a higher vertical leap.

During his career with the Tigers, Benson played wide receiver and running back while also returning some kicks. For his career, he caught 128 passes for 1,620 yards and 11 touchdowns. He also had 45 rushing attempts for 321 yards and three more scores.

At the professional level, his best bet will be to catch on as an explosive kick returner who can also be used on gadget-type plays. The Broncos will likely give him a shot as a wide receiver in training camp and preseason games, but his odds of making the team that way are slim.

Chance of making 53-man roster (1-10 scale): 3

Benson reminds me of Isaiah McKenzie, just with a little more size. If the Broncos are looking for a player to specifically add a spark as a return man, Benson could fit that bill. Ideally, he’s likely battling to earn a spot on the practice squad in order to continue his development as a player.

That said, speed can’t be taught and because of his quickness, he will always have a chance to open some eyes and become a useful player in the league.
