Broncos to unleash new Cobbo, Walsh combo on Rabbitohs

Brisbane are fine-tuning the combination between fullback Reece Walsh and new centre Selwyn Cobbo and intend to unleash it on South Sydney.

The duo combined for tries on numerous occasions in 2023 when Cobbo was playing right winger. Now he is left centre and the liaison has a different dimension to it but can be just as effective.

Broncos assistant coach Matt Ballin confirmed on Monday that skipper Adam Reynolds would play against his former club at Suncorp Stadium on Thursday night after recovering from a knee injury.

Second-rower Brendan Piakura (concussion) is going through NRL protocols to be available and trained alongside Reynolds on Monday.

The Rabbitohs are without injured right centre Campbell Graham and switched Isaiah Tass there in the round-one loss to Manly

Steve Renouf, one of Brisbane's greatest centres, watched Walsh and Cobbo put on several new moves on Monday, and said their combination would be a key to beating the Rabbitohs.

"We saw the combination evolve last year with Selwyn and I don't think it will be any different on Thursday night," Renouf said.

"Reece is the dynamic that has changed the backline and our attack, getting to that outside edge and creating a two-on-one and he does it so easy with his speed.

""I think Selwyn is made to be a centre but you've got to do your time.

"I did my time on the wing and I think Selwyn is going to be a great centre. He's got the size and the mobility. I was just watching him train and his peripheral feel around the game is second to none."

Ballin is also excited about what the Walsh-Cobbo partnership can achieve.

"It is a only new combination. Selwyn has moved to centre which takes a little bit of adjusting to," he said.

"He is a natural centre and I think we can only look at him improving in that position in attack and defence.

"He is working really hard with Walshy, Ezra Mam and Brendan Piakura on that left edge and will evolve as the season goes on."

The availability of Reynolds is a huge boost to the Broncos and Ballin said he trained with verve.

"Reyno is good. He trained and did everything in contact," Ballin said.

"I liked the way he ran and took the line on. He has got a lot of confidence in his body and what it feels like. You've got to back him with the experience he has got."
