Broncos sign QB Brett Rypien to practice squad

The Denver Broncos are signing quarterback Brett Rypien to their 16-player practice squad, according to KOA Radio’s Brandon Krisztal.

Rypien (6-2, 202 pounds) signed with the Broncos as a college free agent out of Boise State following last year’s NFL Draft. He started the year on the practice squad and was promoted to serve as Brandon Allen’s backup when Joe Lock went down with a neck injury.

When Drew Lock returned last year and took over starting duties, Allen served as the backup and Rypien returned to the practice squad. Denver is probably hoping to have Rypien serve on the practice squad again this year.

This year, Lock will start for the Broncos and Jeff Driskel will be QB2.

Rypien is the nephew of former NFL quarterback Mark Rypien, who won two Super Bowls with the Washington Redskins during his career. While playing for college football’s Broncos, Brett totaled 13,578 passing yards and 90 touchdowns against 29 interceptions in four seasons.
