During his introductory press conference last week, new Broncos offensive coordinator Pat Shurmur said the Giants draft quarterback Daniel Jones last year was an “organizational decision.” We don’t want to put words in Shurmur’s mouth but that might have been a diplomatic way of saying it wasn’t his choice to make.
“Last year we were in the quarterback market,” Shurmur said. “Typically, when you draft a quarterback high, those are organizational decisions. At that time last year, the best decision — what we felt was best for the Giants — was Daniel Jones.”
Shurmur didn’t say where New York had Drew Lock on its big board but he indicated that the team had given him a high grade.
“We had a very, very high opinion of Drew Lock,” Shurmur said. “We liked him a great deal. There are a lot of similarities between the two players. They’re young, talented players that had very good college careers. Their skill sets are very similar. They can throw the ball well.
“They can move around well. You saw flashes of really good football from both of them this year as they played as rookies, so I’m very, very excited to be able to work with Drew Lock and really all the offensive players.”
After serving as the Giants’ head coach for two years, Shurmur was fired following the 2019 season. He is now being considered for Michigan State’s head coach position but seems to be committed to coaching in Denver.
