The NFL combine is a massive event each offseason. All 32 teams attend the combine to scout and evaluate NFL draft prospects and most of those teams bring nearly all of their coaching staff with them to Indianapolis.
This year, the Broncos and Rams are taking a different approach.
Denver and Los Angeles will not take their assistant coaches to Indiana, according to a report from ESPN’s Adam Schefter. Broncos coach Vic Fangio and Rams coach Sean McVay believe it will be a “better use of the assistant coaches’ time to study prospects on tape rather than in person,” according to ESPN.
Schefter reports that Fangio will attend the combine in-person and McVay will attend the first few days of the event. McVay won’t be taking his offensive and defensive coordinators, Kevin O’Connell and Brandon Staley, with him to the combine.
ESPN’s report noted that both teams will see “hefty financial savings” by not having their entire staffs travel to Indianapolis. Given how easy it is to follow the event on television, it wouldn’t be surprising to see other teams start leaving their assisant coaches at home for future combines.
