The new “One Touch Switch” system, due to come into effect in April 2023, is expected to streamline the process of changing internet providers.
It will also cut the time it takes to move to a new firm down to 24 hours, where it is “technically possible.”
Providers will also have to compensate their customers if things go wrong and they are left without internet for more than one working day.
The move has been welcomed by Which? But the consumer watchdog urged people who are unhappy with their current provider not to wait until the new scheme comes into effect before switching.
Spokeswoman Rocio Concha said: “The coronavirus crisis has meant consumers are more reliant on a good broadband connection than they’ve ever been before.
“So it’s positive to see the regulator removing barriers that are preventing people from switching providers and getting a better deal.
“Consumers also shouldn’t delay looking for a new deal – anyone unhappy with their provider could save up to £143 a year and get improved service by switching.”
The new rules will be welcomed by many customers, in particular as more and more continue to work from home following the Coronavirus pandemic, with more people than ever relying on a strong internet connection for their work.
An Ofcom study revealed that 4 in 10 Brits have been put off from trying to move operators because of the complicated nature of the process.
