Brits captured in Ukraine sentenced to death by firing squad

Two British men along with a Moroccan national have reportedly been sentenced to death. Aiden Aslin, 28, from Nottinghamshire, Shaun Pinner, 48, from Bedfordshire, and a third man, Moroccan national Saaudun Brahim, were earlier this week reported to have appeared in a court in the Donetsk People's Republic, which is held by pro-Russian rebels.

Mr Aslin, 28 and Mr Pinner, 48, were found guilty of taking action towards violent seizure of power at a court in the self-proclaimed Donetsk People’s Republic. Mr Brahim, was convicted alongside them.

The men were accused of being “mercenaries” after fighting with Ukrainian troops. Russian media outlet RIA Novosti reported Thursday that the three are set to face a firing squad.

Interfax, another Russian news agency, claimed the men would be able to appeal against their convictions.

Earlier this week Mr Aslin's family asked for privacy at "a very sensitive and emotional time". They added: "We are currently working with the Ukrainian government and the Foreign Office to try and bring Aiden home."

Dominic Raab has previously said the Foreign Office will “make all the representations” on Mr Aslin’s behalf. Speaking on Monday, he told LBC: “In relation to that case, I don’t know all the details, but of course we would expect the laws of armed conflict to be respected, and we will make sure that we will make all the representations. I know the Foreign Office will be looking at making sure all those representations are made.”
