British tourists among 60 people ‘poisoned’ following incident at hotel in Spain

  • Dozens of tourists , including children and elderly individuals, were hospitalised after falling ill from a hotel swimming pool in Benahavís, near Marbella , Spain 's Costa del Sol , on Sunday.
  • At least 60 guests at the unnamed hotel required treatment after swimming in the pool, with some taken to Costa del Sol Hospital and others treated on site.
  • An initial investigation suggests a ruptured pressure pump, responsible for injecting chlorine and acid, caused the pool's chlorine and pH systems to malfunction, releasing other gases.
  • The hotel's pool was subsequently closed for maintenance, and a van from a Malaga-based lab was seen entering the premises.
  • The incident follows a separate event in Italy on the same day, where nine people were poisoned and 50 evacuated due to a chlorine leak at a swimming pool .
