British teen killed in avalanche on school ski trip pictured as friends pay tribute

A British teen killed in an avalanche on a school ski trip has been pictured as friends pay tribute.

Archie Harvey, 18, was reportedly one of seven students on a ski tour on the Gstelliwang slope near Switzerland's Meiringen resort on Tuesday March 21.

The group were caught in a devastating 50ft avalanche on the Wellhorn Mountain when Archie vanished before his body was discovered after an extensive search by rescue services.

Archie is son of property developer Philip Harvey and designer Sarah Metcalfe - with the family believed to have lived in a £2million property in West London.

It's believed Archie had been living in Switzerland after initially attending school in the UK.

He was said to have been a student at the exclusive £57,000-a-year Ecole d'Humanité international school, in the town of Hasliberg is just a short distance away from the Gstelliwang ski slope.

The avalanche struck at around 4.25pm before rescue teams and a helicopter were deployed to help survivors, reports the Mail Online.

The school said in a statement that the 'very experienced group' had taken the necessary precautions for a ski tour, like taking the avalanche bulletin into account and equipping the students with avalanche transceivers, probes and shovels.

It's understood one other US female student also went missing during the avalanche and her she is yet to be found.

A funeral for Archie is understood to have been held in Switzerland two weeks ago.

Archie and other students were reportedly on the slope with a mountain guide, a youth and sports leader as well as three other external individuals.

Swiss Alpine Rescue Rega crews, Swiss Alpine Rescue, several Rega, Air-Glaciers and Swiss Helicopter helicopters, mountain specialists and other employees of the Bern canton police and the Canton of Bern Care Team took part in the rescue efforts.

The school said in a statement issued at the time of the tragedy: "We regret this terrible accident and are deeply saddened.

"We extend our heartfelt condolences and sympathy to all students, their families and relatives."

The Gstelliwang slope where the avalanche struck is at the foot of the northwest face of the Wellhorn.
