British street transformed into magical winter wonderland sparked by neighbour rivalry

A British street has been transformed into a magical winter wonderland - in a tradition sparked by neighbourly competitiveness.

Residents on Templemore Road in Oxton, Wirral, have transformed the street into a magical winter wonderland to raise money for charity.

The tradition started as "a bit of competitive rivalry" leading up to Christmas between Ian Crombie and a close friend almost 10 years ago, with other houses having joined in on the festive fun in the years since.

For the past three years, the street has raised funds for a chosen charity.

This year the street's fundraiser is MND association, which is "particularly important" to the street, the Liverpool Echo reports.

Ian Crombie said: "It's particularly important to us this year as one of the residents has been diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease.

"We're really trying to support that family, as well as bringing a lot of joy to people who pass by.

"We've had so many messages, not just from people on the road, saying that they really appreciate the lights display and how it puts a smile on their face.

"People are really appreciative of what we do as a road."

Ian said he has been putting up Christmas lights since October and taken around six or seven days to put them up.

"Surprisingly, he said that "taking them down doesn't take very long".

The Christmas lights will be on display until the new year. There are QR codes around the road for visitors to donate to the fundraising page.

Ian added: "The displays have gotten bigger and bigger. The last three years really the whole road have galvanised and come together.

"One year we did Wirral Hospice, another we did Claire House and this year it is MND."

The lights will be switched on from 4.30pm until 9.30pm and until 10.30pm on a Saturday.
