A British man has drowned on the holiday island of Majorca after his partner saw him floating in the water.
Lifeguards brought the 62-year-old man out of the water and emergency responders spent nearly an hour trying to revive him on the sand, on Thursday.
Their attempts to save him were unsuccessful and he was pronounced dead at the scene.
The tragedy happened at the holiday resort of Puerto Pollensa in the north-east of Majorca, Spain, which is popular with British holidaymakers including many who have second homes in the area.
The alarm was raised around 3.30pm local time yesterday.
Well-placed sources said his partner alerted lifeguards.
One said: “She saw him floating in the water after he went for a swim. Lifeguards pulled him out of the water and tried to revive him before emergency responders took over when they arrived.”
The dead man has not been named.
A routine probe into the tragedy coordinated by a local investigating judge has been launched.
In April a British man drowned in front of his teenage son in Tenerife.
The unnamed 58-year-old was pulled out of the sea by two people said to include a nurse who performed CPR on him after he went into cardiac arrest while they waited for emergency responders to arrive.
The emergency responders continued to try to revive him after reaching the scene, near the Punta de Teno lighthouse at the northwestern tip of Tenerife, but there was nothing they could do to save him.
And in May a British toddler drowned in a a swimming pool at a villa in La Nuria near Benidorm.
Sources said at the time the 19-month-old child’s mum was at the property with three of the youngster’s siblings at the time.
Puerto Pollensa, which in the local Majorcan language is known as Port de Pollenca, is one of the favourite destinations on the island for British holidaymakers.
Meanwhile a tourist on the island tragically died after he jumped off a 12-metre cliff having misjudged its height.
The man, 26, was visiting from California in the US, but was sadly killed when he landed on the rocks below.
Local reports from the Mallorca Zeitung say the man was visiting Cala Varques Bay in the eastern part of the Balearic island when the incident occurred at 1.50pm on March 25.
It is known as a family-friendly resort. Visitors over the years have included former PM David Cameron and his family and former professional road and track racing cyclist Sir Bradley Wiggins.
