Britain's Got Talent hopefuls Welsh of the West End just miss out on place in final

A Welsh group of West End performers, who made headlines for a video on social media during lockdown, have just missed out on a place in the final of Britain's Got Talent.

Welsh of the West End, which includes stars like Steffan Hughes and Sophie Evans, were among the top three voted for by the public, alongside stand up comedian Axel Blake and young poet Aneeshwar Kunchala, during the last semi-final on Friday, June 3.

Axel went straight through on the public vote while judges David Walliams, Alesha Dixon and Amanda Holden then chose Aneeshwar to take the second final slot. But Sophie told hosts Ant and Dec that Welsh of the West End hoped to keep doing shows together.

Welsh of the West End gained a standing ovation from the judges during their first audition, with Simon Cowell calling them "exceptional" and Walliams saying: "There's something about the Welsh." Read more about that here.

And during their semi-final performance when they performed the spinetingling track You Will Be Found, the judges were equally as moved.

Holden told them: "Oh my goodness me - a solid, flawless, beautiful performance. I adore that song. Your harmonies were perfect."

Cowell said: "I was literally with some new friends I've met who are from wales and I was talking about how Wales has some amazing singers and you proved the point.

"What I love about you is you know who you are and the direction you want to go down and you choose great songs and you have great harmonies. You were fantastic, well done."

Walliams was also full of praise, saying: "It's just a brilliant idea this group. Obviously you have this incredible passion for the music you sing. I'm sure this could be a show in itself - the greatest singers in the West End all together and as a bonus they're all Welsh."

But Dixon was not as impressed and got many boos from the audience when she said: "You are a polished act for sure but if I'm being honest you left me feeling a bit underwhelmed tonight."

The final takes place on Sunday, June 5 on ITV and the competition's champion will win £250,000 and a chance to perform in front of royalty at this year's Royal Variety Performance. You can read the full line up of finalists here.
