Brit visits 51 pubs in 9 hours downing drinks in 4 minutes to beat Guinness World Record

A British man claims to have set a new world record by visiting 51 pubs in nine hours.

Matt Ellis, 48, had to drink at least 125ml at each boozer to comply with Guinness World Record rules.

He mainly swigged orange juice and diet coke out of respect for his health but did sink four pints of bitter.

Matt decided to take on the challenge to draw attention to the pub industry’s plight during the pandemic.

He said: “It was all about the joy of pubs and the people you meet.

“I am a big fan of pubs - the contribution they make to our society and the camaraderie you can enjoy in them.

“It’s been a really bad year.

“I wanted to raise their profile for people to get down to their local and support their community.”

Matt ate a full English breakfast to line his stomach before heading to Wetherspoons pub The Regal in Cambridge at midday on Sunday.

Over the next eight hours and 52 minutes he visited scores of popular boozers while being monitored by two independent witnesses.

Matt spent an average of four minutes on each pub and avoided ordering ‘complex’ drinks like shandies in favour of speedier options.

He believes he drank a total of 6.3 litres during the pub crawl which finished at The Weeping Ash in his hometown of St Neots, Cambs.

Matt said: “I was drinking so much liquid that I couldn’t fit any food in.

“During the night I went to the loo six or seven times.”

Matt, who runs a wine merchant’s, says he still qualifies for the record despite only drinking four pints of beer.

He added: “I wanted to keep it responsible and didn’t drink too much for my health.

“Maybe several years ago I would have made it with 51 alcoholic drinks but not now.”

Guinness World Record officials are expected to assess Matt’s effort within the next week.
