Bristol weather: Met Office predicts nine hours of uninterrupted rain

Bristol is set to be drenched with nine solid hours of rainfall, according to the Met Office.

Temperatures have plummeted overnight but despite the almost freezing conditions expected today (Wednesday, January 5), winter sunshine is forecast all day.

It is tomorrow (Thursday) when rain clouds are expected to roll in, with heavy rain predicted all afternoon.

According to the Met Office's forecast as of 8.30am today, temperatures tomorrow will be slightly warmer than today, creeping up to about 8C by the early evening.

Charts suggest light rain will begin to fall from 11am until 1pm, when downpours are set to intensify.

Heavy showers are expected until 5pm, when it should ease up but continue with light rain until 8pm.

Five flood warnings and 43 flood alerts are currently active nationally, according to the Environment Agency's map, but none are affecting Bristol at the time of writing.

The closest alert is that for the Severn estuary from Gloucester to Sharpness, which advises: "A series of high tides is due in the Severn Estuary until Wednesday evening.

"Flooding may affect low lying land and roads adjacent to the Severn Estuary from Sandhurst to Chepstow and Sharpness. High tides may also affect watercourses draining into the Severn Estuary.

"Please avoid using low lying footpaths near local watercourses."

No Met Office warnings for rain are active today or tomorrow, but there are several for ice and snow.

These cover parts of Scotland, Northern Ireland, northern England and the Midlands, and do not impact Bristol.

However, the city could be in store for the white stuff later this month, according to long-range forecasts.

Last year, January 24 was the date that Bristol woke up to a blanket of snow after it settled overnight.
