Bristol Rovers sign former Walsall and Falkirk full-back after injuries

Bristol Rovers have signed Luke Leahy on a free transfer.

The left-back has plenty of experience in League One, having played for Walsall for the last two seasons before being released this summer.

It is a position the Gas are currently short in, with Michael Kelly having missed two training sessions on their pre-season trip to Ireland due to injury, whilst Tareiq Holmes-Dennis was not fit enough to travel.

The 26-year-old started his career at Rugby Town but moved to Falkirk in 2012 after trials with the likes of Birmingham City, Bradford City and Peterborough United.

In what could be a promising sign of versatility, Leahy was initially signed as an attacking midfielder by the Scottish side but moved to left-back - and was even named as a substitute goalkeeper on one occasion.

He made 127 appearances in five years at Falkirk before joining Walsall in 2017.

Speaking about the transfer, Rovers boss Graham Coughlan told the club website that Leahy can have an impact in attack as well as defence.

"Luke is a player we're very pleased to have at the club," he said.

"He's got two League One seasons under his belt, so his experience there will be a great asset going forward.

"What's particularly impressive about Luke is his ability to have an impact further up the pitch, he is great defensively, but also his assist statistics speak for themselves.

"Between him, Michael Kelly and Tareiq Holmes-Dennis, we've got a lot of choice on the left side of the defence, so I'm pleased to have that kind of squad depth at my disposal."
