Bristol Rovers confirm exit of Jonah Ayunga to League One club

Jonah Ayunga has left Bristol Rovers for Morecambe, the Gas announced on Monday.

The striker has moved to the League One Shrimps for an undisclosed fee after one season at the Mem.

The 24-year-old scored three goals in 35 appearances for Rovers last term, with his two league goals coming in the same game against Portsmouth.

His other goal came in an EFL Trophy tie with Walsall.

Ayunga joined Rovers from National League South side Havant & Waterlooville after scoring 19 goals in 35 appearances in the 2019/20 season.

Bristol Live understands Rovers paid in the region of £40,000 to sign the former Brighton & Hove Albion target man from the Hawks, but a year later he is moving on from BS7.

Ayunga was told in the past fortnight by Joey Barton he was free to pursue a move away from the Mem, with the manager eager to sign a proven goalscorer to lead the line for Rovers in League Two.

With Rovers in excess of their permitted 20-man squad, departures were going to be inevitable and Ayunga was earmarked to leave.

Unlike Rovers, though, Ayunga will be playing in the third tier next season for Stephen Robinson's Shrimps after signing a two-year contract.

He was unfortunate at Rovers, being forced into regular first-team action perhaps ahead of his time, with Jonson Clarke-Harris' sale and the failure to mitigate for the now Peterborough United star's departure placing a heavy weight on a player learning the ropes in EFL.

“I’m happy to be here, my first day went well and I’m looking to get settled in,” Ayunga told Morecambe's club website.

“It’s happened very quickly, three or four days ago I had no idea it was going to happen.

“I had a chat with the gaffer here and he’s convinced me to come, he said he’s been aware of me for a couple of years.

“It was good to make my League One debut last year and get a good amount of games, so knowing what it takes is what I’m going to bring to the team.”

Robinson added: “I’m delighted, Jonah’s a boy I’ve kept tabs on since Bristol Rovers signed him and he has a lot of good attributes.

“He is a big, strong boy, he can run in behind, and there are aspects of his game we know we can improve, he’s still young and there’s a lot of potential in him.

“I’m trying to get two in every position and within our budget it’s difficult, but we’ve managed to do that in a short space of time, people are starting to gel and understand, and I think Jonah just adds to that.”
