Bristol Come Dine With Me contestants lock horns over 'school dinner' food

The long-running Channel 4 cooking reality programme and British cultural institution, Come Dine with Me, is in Bristol this week with a brand-new five-part series. In the episode that aired today (February 6), "party girl" Jade took on the role of hostess, with the night's celebrations based on a festival theme, however the evening was not to everyone's taste.

Viewers watched as Adam, Joe, Sarah and Jack arrived all dressed up for the festival theme. However things began to take a turn early on into the show as Sarah decided to make it known Jade's evening was not up to her standards.

Sarah remarked: "If I were in a restaurant I would have sent that back," to Jade's starter of garlic prawns on crusty bread. Jade admitted she's not a professional cook: "My style of cooking is smash it all together and hope for the best," she explained.

"I do not care about presentation at all, not one bit, just the taste init."

Things continued to go downhill for Jade as she served her main course of cheesy lasagne. The camera caught Sarah picking at her dish as she tried to limit how much she ate. "Worst canteen food I've ever had, I wouldn't eat it wouldn't buy it, it was really awful," she complained.

As the evening went on, it became obvious that Sarah was looking for an argument. For her entertainment, Jade held a "rave" in the garden, but this did not appear to cheer Sarah up. "Call that a rave? That was ridiculous, I don't know what her concept of what a rave is, I'm sorry it was ridiculous," she said.

However, as Jade presented her dessert of mint chocolate cheesecake, things were starting to look slightly more positive. Unlike with her previous meals, Sarah was seen finishing her dessert. Even though her description of the dish was only "edible," it wasn't overly critical.

All in all, Jade received a discouraging score of 20/40, however, she was under no illusion about her chances of winning. "There is zero chance of me winning this competition, but it's cool. I want to see the stress and pressure put on the other people throughout the week," Jade explained.

When marking Jade's evening, Sarah said: "I didn't enjoy school dinners when I was at school but Jade made a valiant effort with her limited amount of cooking skills so for that reason I'm going to give her a very generous 4."

The feud did not go unnoticed by the other guests as Adam explained: "I think Sarah has had it in for Jade, certainly during the whole of the meal she seemed to be trying to rub Jade up the wrong way and I think Jade actually dealt with it very well the whole of the way through dinner."

Drum and bass lover, Jade added at the end: "Sarah is probably intimidated by a strong woman, come on we should come together and not be enemies."

This week all of the participants will host their dinner parties at a modern Bristol home that has been provided by the show. This is because filming took place during covid restrictions - the guests will also be seen socially distancing. Jade approved of the changes, saying: "I prefer the fact we are hosting somewhere else, kids aren't smashing the gaff up, dogs not kicking off, cheers for that."
