Bristol City looking for a reserve goalkeeper with Niki Maenpaa likely to be released

Bristol City are considering recruiting a second goalkeeper to provide competition for Dan Bentley.

Bristol Live has learned that the Robins are examining their options in goal and have been tracking several goalkeepers with the view of bringing in a new no.2.

City have been linked with Jonathan Bond in recent weeks and he is one of a number of shot-stoppers being examined by CEO Mark Ashton and his recruitment team in BS3.

It is expected that Niki Maenpaa will be released from the club and that this will free up a space for another recruit, although City could yet keep Maenpaa and look to loan out promising talent Max O'Leary, ideally to a Championship side to further the 23-year-old's development.

City also have Jojo Wollacott on their books and also have high hopes for the former Forest Green loanee, who made the bench several times last season - albeit as the club's nominated homegrown player.

Any final decisions must be ratified by the club's next head coach, with an appointment expected imminently.

The Robins are also looking to recruit at least one new full-back, Bristol Live understands.

Incoming transfers are likely to be limited with COVID-19 having affected the club and its ambitions. Redundancies have been announced at Ashton Gate Stadium and with doubts over how many fans can attend games next season, the coming campaign has been termed one of 'austerity' by CEO Mark Ashton.

City are under pressure to sell several key players, with Niclas Eliasson and Famara Diedhiou having just a year to run on their contracts and clubs from Europe interested in the pair.

And the Robins are considering selling several senior players to make room for young prospects Liam Walsh, Joe Morrell and Jonny Smith to play.

Korey Smith and Ashley Williams are also out of contract this summer with the pair awaiting to see if they will be kept on.
