Bristol City have Championship competition in their pursuit of Luton Town forward Harry Cornick

Bristol City are not the only Championship side keen on signing Luton Town forward Harry Cornick with Swansea City also having submitted a bid for the 27-year-old, however Bristol Live understands the Robins remain front-runners for his signature.

City’s interest in Cornick was revealed on Thursday with Football Insider reporting on Friday morning that the Robins and Swansea have tabled offers for the versatile winger, who is out of contract this summer.

Cornick was very much under consideration as a summer arrival for City but Antoine Semenyo’s sale to Bournemouth, which should be confirmed on Friday, has led to their need being brought forward by five months.

Cornick hasn’t been a regular starter for the Hatters this term due to injury and a change of manager, after his best ever goalscoring campaign in 2021/22, and with Luton yet to offer him a new contract, they may consider a sale in this window is the best possible business decision given the circumstances.

City see Cornick as a common sense addition to their squad given his considerable Championship experience and acumen and any funds for transfers from the Semenyo sale can be concentrated on the summer where there is far more time to look for value and negotiate a better deal.

Sources have indicated that Swansea’s interest in the 27-year-old is long-standing and the expected loss of Michael Obafemi to Burnley has heightened their need for a wide forward, but there is confidence within Ashton Gate that they remain Cornick’s first choice.

The former Bournemouth trainee has amassed 208 appearances for the Hatters since signing in 2017; 121 of those have been in the Championship where he has found the target 21 times and provided 17 assists, predominantly from the right flank but he is equally adept through the middle plus, theoretically, could be stationed on the left-hand side as an inverted winger.

With Nigel Pearson increasingly adopting a 4-3-3 system in recent weeks, he looks an ideal addition into this system.

As Semenyo departs for Bournemouth, with Tommy Conway out due to a hamstring injury, Andi Weimann not yet fit, Pearson's only forward options presently are Nahki Wells, Sam Bell, Mark Sykes and Chris Martin, who could be set to leave the club before the deadline.
