Bristol City fans call on Nigel Pearson to make Sheffield Wednesday star top transfer priority

He has haunted Bristol City for years, but Robins fans believe the time has come for Barry Bannan to start doing the damage in a red shirt.

In a Bristol Live survey of more than 700 supporters, Sheffield Wednesday midfielder Bannan was the consensus choice for the player fans most want Nigel Pearson to lure to Ashton Gate as part of his summer rebuild.

Bannan remains under contract at Hillsborough, but after relegation to League One and financial troubles, Wednesday are likely to sell their top assets this summer.

Bannan, one of the Championship's most established deep-lying playmakers, is sure to be one player who will be the subject of intense interest. He scored twice and added five assists in the second tier this term.

He is familiar to City fans, having scored in consecutive wins against the Robins in South Yorkshire in recent seasons, and the former Aston Villa man, aged 31, was also outstanding in the meeting at Hillsborough last month.

His overall record of three goals – plus two assists – against City over the years is his best against any club throughout his career.

Supporters of a City persuasion were certainly happy to see the back of him in a Wednesday shirt with Darren Moore's side heading into the third tier after a poor season worsened by costly off-field troubles, that led to a decisive points deduction in the relegation battle.

But it is clear there is a huge respect there, with an overwhelming message being delivered in our survey: City fans have the 27-cap Scotland international atop their transfer wishlist.

Alfie Mawson, Joe Bryan Alex Mowatt and Wes Morgan all featured high on the list of names put forward in the open poll, though a deal for the Leicester City FA Cup-winning skipper can be ruled out, with the 37-year-old set to retire when the Premier League campaign concludes tomorrow.

In the survey, 30 per cent of respondents declared centre-back the key area of concern in Pearson's squad as it stands, with 15 per cent calling for a centre-forward to be brought in as a matter of urgency following Famara Diedhiou's exit.
