Man trying to buy beer said he was going to party with '20 to 30 people'

A Bristol brewery which launched a takeaway and collection service to allow it to continue operating amid coronavirus has stopped collections after a customer said they were picking up beer for a house party.

Tapestry was one of many businesses across Bristol to diversify last week as tougher measures were introduced to tackle the pandemic.

The brewery's owners, Calum Doutch and Dan Snow, announced they had started serving beer and pizza for people to take away from the Totterdown site on Thursday (March 19), as well as launched a delivery service. The delivery service is still running.

But on Sunday a customer told them he was "heading to a house party with only 20 to 30 people there" after picking up two cartons of beer, equating to six pints, causing them to scrap the service.

"After that incident we had a chat and both felt it wouldn't sit well with us to continue," said Calum.

"We tried to stop the man after he told us he was going to a house party but he didn't listen.

"The vast majority of our lovely customers have been incredibly responsible and respectful, but this made us re-evaluate very quickly and left us feeling uncomfortable.

"Of course we want to keep our staff employed over the coming months but we also have to be responsible and discourage people from social gatherings, as we fully appreciate the seriousness of coronavirus and the need to prevent it from spreading further.

"So we decided to knock the takeaway idea on the head and will instead just be running the delivery service from now on."

Calum said he and Dan checked with their staff to see if they were happy to continue with the delivery, and they said yes.

The 35-year-old added they are adhering to all the necessary guidelines and protocols to ensure employees and customers are safe when delivering.

The brewery, which launched in 2017, is offering pizza and beer combo deals for individuals or small groups, including a pizza and two pints for £15.

NHS and emergency service workers are entitled to 50 per cent off their order if they show ID when paying.
