Bristol brewer Left Handed Giant named among world's top 10 new breweries

A Bristol brewer has been named among the world's top 10 new breweries.

Left Handed Giant features alongside breweries in America, Poland, Australia and Canada in RateBeer's annual round-up.

RateBeer is an independent website which allows customers to review and rank brewers and pubs across the planet.

To qualifying, brewers had to be added to RateBeer's records between June 1, 2019 and January 1, 2021.

A RateBeer spokesperson said: "These awards often recognise breweries that go on to join the world's elite craft brewers, and that enjoy continued great success.

"The following group of only ten reflects a very elite selection from a very good field.

"Congratulations to all of our winners, and our very best wishes for continued success."

While Left Handed Giant was formed in 2014, its sensational Finzels Reach brewpub opened in 2019.

Bruce Gray, the brewery's MD, said the global recognition is a "shining light in the middle of a very dark period".

"The whole drive behind the brewpub was to create a world class facility in the centre of Bristol that would help showcase the city as a renowned city for beer," he said.

"To get this kind of recognition despite only being able to trade for a total of nine months after opening is really lovely. It's such a nice piece of feedback on what was a huge and challenging project for us.

"This is a shining light in the middle of a very dark period.

"But of course it's tinged with a bit of sadness because it would have been nice to celebrate this kind of award by having a busy pub full of customers, which isn't possible right now."

About Left Handed Giant

Left Handed Giant was formed in 2014 when a man named Rich Poole approached the owners of King Street's Small Bar, Bruce Gray and Jack Granger, and gave them some beer to taste.

This kick-started a brewing journey that began on a 200 litre kit at the back of that very bar, before developing into a "cuckoo brewery operation" known as Left Handed Giant.

Left Handed Giant's own physical brewery operation began in St Philips in 2017, before the company raised more than £1m from the local community via Crowdcube to build the beating heart of its business - the brewpub overlooking the floating harbour.

The brewery now operates across two sites, selling more than 70 per cent of its 4,000 hectoliters per year production through its own venues at the Finzels Reach brewpub, St Philips tap room and from where it all began at Small Bar.

The brewery is community owned and aims to execute an employee buy-out within the next three years, which would make it one of the only UK employee-owned breweries.
