Multiple students at an elite private school in Brisbane are being investigated by police over “potentially illegal” explicit content allegedly shared on a Snapchat group.

According to the school’s headmaster, the school was contacted last week about the Snapchat group that was created and managed by a group of year 10 students. The group is understood to have included up to 40 students.

In the letter to parents on Friday, obtained by The Courier-Mail, the headmaster confirmed the college quickly began making inquiries after concerns about “inappropriate and troubling material” were raised.

“The college immediately commenced a fact-finding process looking into these concerns, during which we spoke with several students and their families,” the letter stated, adding the parents of students who may have been involved in sharing these images have been informed.

“Upon discovering this, we immediately reported the matter to the police, who are now investigating.”

It added that while the situation is “confronting”, appropriate action will be taken following the outcome of these investigations, “in accordance with [the school’s] policies and values”.

“And we want to assure you that our staff are ready to help any students and families who require it. Our heads of year, heads of house and college counsellors are available to provide support as needed,” the headmaster said in the letter, per The Courier Mail.

A spokesperson for Queensland Police confirmed a report was received on May 22 regarding “inappropriate images being shared on an online platform”.

“Detectives from the Inner West Child Protection Investigation Unit are investigating the matter,” they told PEDESTRIAN.TV in a statement.

“Anyone with information is urged to contact police.”

Speaking to The Courier Mail, one parent claimed their child’s friend was added to the group, who saw the content before immediately leaving the chat.

“He thought it was a school group chat, so he accepted the invitation and was in and once he got in there, he saw what the content was, and was shocked and promptly left,” they said.

The content is alleged to be “very graphic”, including a pre-pubescent girl allegedly getting “sadistically exploited and burned” and “very graphic” imagery of a deceased person, the parent told the publication.

It’s understood the content also involves two nude children, who appear to be in their early teens.

“How did these kids even get access to this material?” the parent said.

“In my mind, by the time you’re 15 or 16, you know how serious it is. That’s why the criminal age is 14 … How have these kids got to the age of 15 and 16, and thought that that’s funny.”
