‘Brioche and chocolate spread? I call it pure nostalgia’: Ilhan Mohamed’s week in snacks

Brioche and chocolate spread

Let’s talk about the whirlwind that was my week. As we dash from playdates to toddler dance classes, it’s become clear that keeping up this level of energy requires some serious organisational wizardry. But wait, there’s more! In the midst of all this joyful mayhem with my toddler, I’ve got my own hectic week to contend with, complete with looming deadlines and grownup responsibilities. It’s like trying to juggle while riding a unicycle – entertaining but challenging. With so much happening, I’ve discovered that snacks are a lifeline. And it’s not just the energy boost they bring, it’s the burst of joy too. So, allow me to showcase a week in my snacking life.

Monday
It’s 10am and I am already battling a mid-Monday-morning morning slump. My energy levels are dipping and I yearn for a snack that can envelop me in sweetness and comfort – chocolate! I toast a thick slice of brioche until perfectly golden brown, filling my kitchen with its buttery aroma. Then I reach for a jar of Bonne Maman Chocolate Hazelnut Spread, its rich fragrance tempting my senses. I spread a generous layer on to the brioche, watching it melt slowly, glistening in the sunlight. The buttery softness of the brioche contrasts with the hit of velvety-smooth chocolate spread. It’s a moment of pure nostalgia for me, a grownup version of happy childhood mornings.

Tuesday
As I contemplate my snack for the day, I find myself yearning for something savoury. Smoked salmon with cream cheese pops into my mind. The idea of a creamy, briny combination has me salivating before I even enter the kitchen. My bagel of choice? Onion and sesame – though I usually go for plain, so this is a little fancy for me. The smooth, alabaster cream cheese is a blank canvas on to which I delicately drape slices of smoked salmon. As I sink my teeth in, the flavours come alive: lush and tangy and bursting with salty richness. This wasn’t just about satisfying hunger, it was more of an experience. One of sophistication and decadence that reminds me that, sometimes, the most exquisite pleasures lie in the uncomplicated.

Wednesday
Hump day, and it feels particularly autumnal today. I find myself craving a snack that captures the season. Banana bread slathered with Bonne Maman’s Caramelised Apple Spread, so rich and buttery in texture! Like a little classic homemade French tarte tatin if you ask me. Something about a warm slice of banana bread coupled with the spread that’s like taking a bite of autumn itself, with the caramelisation providing a comforting warmth. Magic.

Thursday
On this particular afternoon I am busy and feel I need something satisfying, but that feels like a little treat, to get me to Friday. I put together some large homemade rustic croutons and slather them with cream cheese and a sprinkling of za’atar. Just imagine these little herbaceous golden nuggets. Take no time to make, satisfy my hunger and give me a sense of nourishment and balance I need to keep me going until dinner time.

Friday
It is the end of a long week, and I want a snack that will mark the occasion perfectly. I decide to celebrate by generously covering a cracker with Bonne Maman’s Chocolate & Orange Spread and finishing with the lightest dusting of sea salt flakes. The contrast of the orange flavour with deep, dark chocolate and salty crunch creates a sensory experience that lingers long after the last bite, and tells my body that the weekend is here.
