Hayden battles, Wilson shows what he can do: Brighton 1-1 Newcastle player ratings

Eddie Howe witnessed a second-half revival from Newcastle United as they earned a draw at Brighton.

The Magpies had a poor start when Ciaran Clark was adjudged to have fouled Leandro Trossard, and the Brighton man picked himself up to score from the spot.

The home side were enjoying much of the ball, with United struggling to get into the game.

Newcastle didn't threaten, with the away fans urging them to attack, but were finding chances hard to come by.

However, they levelled the game midway through the second half, when Isaac Hayden turned the ball home following Matt Ritchie's cross and Clark's knockdown.

Newcastle were pushing for a winner - and Brighton were reduced to ten men when goalkeeper Sanchez was sent off for fouling Callum Wilson.

Lewis Dunk went in goal, with Dwight Gayle coming on for United as they looked to pile the pressure on, but the hosts held out.

Here's how Lee Ryder rated the Newcastle players.

Karl Darlow 6

A couple of good claims. But left exposed again and let down after needless challenge for penalty. Had an easier second half.

Jacob Murphy 7

One of the better performers on the night for United.

Emil Krafth 5

Battled away but how long a full-back continues to play in the middle is debatable under Howe.

Jamaal Lascelles 6

On thin ice after yellow card. Picked up a little after the break.

Ciaran Clark 6

Needless challenge to concede penalty. Atoned for the error with an assist.

Matt Ritchie 6

Had freedom after Lamptey went off. Hung up decent cross for equaliser.

Isaac Hayden 7

Battled away and got the equaliser to take man of the match.

Jonjo Shelvey 6

Much better after break.

Miguel Almiron 4

It’s just not happening for him.

Allan Saint-Maximin 4

Didn’t offer much. Was offside for only dangerous moment.

Callum Wilson 7

Showed what he can do with a tiny bit of service.

Subs

Joelinton 6 (73 mins for Almiron)

Did ok when United had the ball with a couple of positive breaks.

Gayle (for Krafth 90)
