Brighton launch internal investigation after video shows players inhaling from balloons during winter break

Brighton and Hove Albion have launched an internal investigation after a video emerged on social media showing a number of players inhaling from balloons during their Premier League winter break.

Shane Duffy, Pascal Gross, Leandro Trossard and Alireza Jahanbakhsh are all shown in the video to be sat around a table and inhaling gas from a balloon, with a number of other players in attendance with them.

The video emerged on a Twitter account named @zahagoat, which appears to be ran by a Crystal Palace supporter – Brighton’s Premier League rivals – and included the caption: “Some of the Brighton players are having a good winter break it seems looool.”

The inaugural winter break allowed the Brighton players to enjoy some time away from the club, and several of them chose to head to Spain for a short holiday as they are not in action again until the 22 February league fixture against Sheffield United.

However, the club are looking into the events of the night out, which saw at least four of the squad inhaling an unknown gas from balloons that are normally used to contain nitrous oxide – known as ‘hippy crack’ – and have confirmed that any disciplinary action will be dealt with in-house.

A club spokesperson said: “The club is aware of the video circulating on social media. This matter is being dealt with internally.”

The incident is an unwelcome development for Brighton manager Graham Potter, with the Seagulls currently on a run of seven matches without a win that has dropped them to 15th in the Premier League table, just three points above the relegation zone.
