The likes of Arsenal and Liverpool will be chasing Pep Guardiola's side, but just as fascinating will be the race for Champions League places, with more teams than ever before having designs on top-four finishes. Chelsea remain big-spending, Manchester United's latest rebuild continues and both Tottenham and Newcastle will expect improvements this year - yet it was Aston Villa who snared fourth last term.

Brighton & Hove Albion vs Newcastle United

16:10

The spoils are shared between these two European hopefuls as Brighton and Newcastle draw 1-1. Although the visitors failed to register a win in their eighth attempt at the Amex, they did well to revive themselves after a bleak first half, where familiar face Minteh scored against his old club. He danced inside from the right in the 28th minute to power past Pope, thanking a slight touch from Burn as he went. The second period saw the Magpies take flight but seemingly get altitude sickness as chances passed them by with two notable penalty shouts overturned by VAR. The first saw Lamptey's contact on Gordon occur outside the area on the hour, while the second in the 71st minute, saw Willock's fall under pressure from Van Hecke ruled as simulation. A third overruling was hard to find in the case of Ayari's 86th-minute block of a Schar free-kick. With his hand was away from his body, it was a clear penalty, of which Isak obliged to tuck away for his 23rd goal of the league season. Seagulls substitute Gomez had a golden chance to win it at the death, yet headed wide as the hosts still managed to exceed their 0.62 xG. They continue in 10th, while fourth-placed Newcastle look over their shoulders at Chelsea and their clash against Liverpool, after underperforming from an xG of 1.75. Thank you for joining us, goodbye!

BIG SAVE VERBRUGGEN! Newcastle counter after Brighton's massive chance. Wilson powers on goal after being fed by Barnes, and it looks to take a nick off a defender. Verbruggen just manages to tip over the bar with excellent reflexes!

Brighton & Hove Albion vs Newcastle United

15:52

Veltman brings down Gordon on the left touchline to bring a Newcastle free-kick in a dangerous crossing position. It's short to Isak who floats it in, but Dunk heads out. A second ball comes in from Schar and Veltman chests the ball back to his compatriot keeper Verbruggen.

Penalty Goal Alexander Isak

Brighton & Hove Albion vs Newcastle United

15:47

Just as this check continues, it's gutting for Verbruggen. He made a superb save as Wilson, it looked like, headed on target. The Dutchman showed lightning reflexes to tip his nod onto the base of the left post.

Brighton & Hove Albion vs Newcastle United

15:46

PENALTY! Schar strikes the free-kick powerfully and Pawson points to the spot as the ball hits Ayari's arm away from his body inside the box! VAR will have a look to confirm on-field suspicions.

Brighton & Hove Albion vs Newcastle United

15:44

Barnes pokes the ball away from a lunging Van Hecke and now Newcastle have a free-kick right inside the D on the edge of the Brighton box. This is a really promising position.

Brighton & Hove Albion vs Newcastle United

15:43

Isak works the ball over to Gordon on the left as Newcastle shirts flood forward. However, Brighton get bodies back and Ayari half-clears. The Toon come forward once more before Livramento misplaces his delivery as the visiting fans contemplate their long journey home, which will be even longer if they don't get anything from this clash.

Brighton & Hove Albion vs Newcastle United

15:41

Newcastle counter after Brighton's promising foray forward. Yet as the ball breaks for Gordon, his shot is poorly pelted high and off-target.

Brighton & Hove Albion vs Newcastle United

15:40

Minteh forces a save from Pope after firing from a tight angle on the left. The looping ball is popped to Estupinan from Lamptey. The wing-back dummies, and it falls to O'Riley, who goes down after slight contact. There are penalty shouts, but Pawson is unmoved.

Brighton & Hove Albion vs Newcastle United

15:38

Minteh crosses from the left after being denied in an earlier move. It's stopped dead by O'Riley in the box, but his swivelling shot is blocked.

Brighton & Hove Albion vs Newcastle United

15:37

After his booking and subsequent withdrawal, it's interesting to go back at Willock. He is the first Newcastle player in the Premier League to be booked for simulation since Miguel Almiron in May 2024, which was also against Brighton, funnily enough.

Brighton & Hove Albion vs Newcastle United

15:33

Substitution Joseph George Willock Callum Eddie Graham Wilson

Brighton & Hove Albion vs Newcastle United

15:33

Pawson's trip to the screen sees a penalty overturned for a second time in this game!

Brighton & Hove Albion vs Newcastle United

Yellow Card Joseph George Willock

Brighton & Hove Albion vs Newcastle United

15:31

PENALTY NEWCASTLE? Willock runs into the box and pokes the ball away from Van Hecke, but it looks as if the Englishman goes down a bit too easy! Pawson's initial decision could be overruled for a second time today! Madley sends Pawson to the screen...

Brighton & Hove Albion vs Newcastle United

15:28

Substitution Simon Kofi Adingra Joël Ivo Veltman

Brighton & Hove Albion vs Newcastle United

15:28

Barnes flights in a deflected cross from the right as Newcastle's siege grows in intensity. This is cleared, before Barnes again pushes to the byline and finds Isak with his back to goal. The striker tries a backheel through the bodies, yet to no avail as Brighton survive.

Brighton & Hove Albion vs Newcastle United

15:27

Substitution Jack Luca Hinshelwood Yasin Abbas Ayari

Brighton & Hove Albion vs Newcastle United

15:26

Newcastle win a foul in a central-right position inside the Brighton half. Trippier stands over it as the delivery into the box seems to be the move. He actually rolls to Gordon to whip in, but Barnes is left chasing it to the left byline as it's a little too powerful.

Brighton & Hove Albion vs Newcastle United

15:23

Isak skips forward and finds Barnes on the right. The winger tries to replicate what Minteh did in the first period, yet his whipped effort is straight down the throat of Verbruggen who does well to cling on.

Brighton & Hove Albion vs Newcastle United

15:21

O'Riley wins a corner on the right as Tonali gets back stealthily to stop the free Brighton man from squaring from the right of the box. The delivery is deep and Burn nods away from Dunk.

Brighton & Hove Albion vs Newcastle United

15:20

Tonali fires from the free-kick, smashing it to the near post. It bobbles about before it's put out for a Newcastle corner on the left. This delivery is cleared before a secondary cross won't drop for Isak as Dunk and Burn challenge in the air.

Brighton & Hove Albion vs Newcastle United

15:18

VAR have a look at the decision from Pawson, and now the penalty looks to be brought back outside the box to where the contact was. It's so close!

Brighton & Hove Albion vs Newcastle United

15:17

Dunk heads out a free-kick delivery from the left, despite being surrounded by Newcastle bodies. A second long ball finds Gordon on the left, and he jinks inside of Lamptey and goes down for a penalty!

Brighton & Hove Albion vs Newcastle United

15:15

Substitution Jacob Kai Murphy Anthony Michael Gordon

Brighton & Hove Albion vs Newcastle United

15:15

Newcastle work the ball infield from the left as Willock finds Guimaraes, and it's pushed over one more man to Murphy who'll hit one... comfortably over the bar from the edge of the area.

Brighton & Hove Albion vs Newcastle United

15:13

Newcastle's free-kick is worked into the Brighton box before Wieffer can get it away. This may be his final action, as Hurzeler gets Lamptey ready to replace the stand-in right-back. Willock then drives down the left and skips away. Baleba tackles well.

Brighton & Hove Albion vs Newcastle United

15:13

Substitution Mats Henrik Berne Wieffer Tariq Kwame Nii-Lante Lamptey

Brighton & Hove Albion vs Newcastle United

15:12

The already-booked Wieffer tackles through Tonali and slides the ball away. There are shouts for a second booking as the foul is awarded, yet Pawson doesn't look to be dismissing the player. Foul only. It's perhaps a final warning for the former Feyenoord man.

Brighton & Hove Albion vs Newcastle United

15:10

Baleba jinks into the Newcastle area before finding Minteh on the right. The ball is flashed back in for Welbeck, but Schar does brilliantly to clear his lines.

Brighton & Hove Albion vs Newcastle United

15:10

It could prove a big 15 minutes here. Both Brighton and Newcastle top the charts for goals scored between the 46th and 60th minute in the Premier League this season, with 14 and 12 strikes, respectively. You feel whoever notches first in this second half could really take the bull by the horns here.

Brighton & Hove Albion vs Newcastle United

15:08

Barnes takes up some great early second-half initiative as he darts down the left. He gets past Wieffer and all the way to the byline before cutting back, but Hinshelwood clears comfortably.

Brighton & Hove Albion vs Newcastle United

15:05

Brighton get us back into the action after the interval sees no changes from either of the two sides.

Brighton & Hove Albion vs Newcastle United

15:02

Brighton's sole shot on target has come in the form of their goal, and exceeding their 0.15 xG in this way has hinted at their ability to strike when it matters. Newcastle have enjoyed wide spells of possession (54% compared to the hosts' 46%), yet their attacks have been misplaced as they've failed to make an impact with their 0.25 xG. As mentioned earlier, Isak is yet to really show up. Brighton are the only side the Swede has faced more than once without scoring against (four games, 321 minutes and 15 shots). The visitors won't be feeling too down, mind, as they have won 18 points from losing positions in the Premier League this season. Only Liverpool (22) and Manchester City (20) have picked up more.

Brighton & Hove Albion vs Newcastle United

14:57

Newcastle's poor south coast form continues at Brighton, as the Seagulls lead 1-0 at the break. We're not sure what was worse for the visiting Magpies - their glimmering eye for goal truly lacking, or whether it was the pain being inflicted by former player Yankuba Minteh. So far, it's his goal that has stood out as the difference-maker, and this arrived 28 minutes into a tense opening exchange. Coming between two Newcastle half-chances, this Sunday lunchtime sandwich was one that the Toon reluctantly had to receive. A further nasty aftertaste hit the palette as the Gambian's dancing effort inside from the right nicked off Burn as it powered into the left side of Pope's goal. Murphy and Barnes have looked promising for the dejected visitors, yet the search parties at half-time will be looking for Isak, as Newcastle's attack has looked dull.

Brighton & Hove Albion vs Newcastle United

14:49

HALF-TIME: BRIGHTON 1-0 NEWCASTLE UNITED

Brighton & Hove Albion vs Newcastle United

14:48

Tonali daudles at the back, and Minteh nearly robs the ball and darts away! The Italian just about recovers and finds Pope!

Brighton & Hove Albion vs Newcastle United

14:46

Schar is all over Welbeck as the forward faces his own keeper's long pass. Brighton look to go quickly with Minteh, but are called back. In the next phase, Estupinan is found by a slick Adingra backheel before his cross is collected high by Pope.

Brighton & Hove Albion vs Newcastle United

14:44

Livramento is fed down the left towards the byline and Baleba tracks back to slide, expecting a cross. The Englishman doesn't fire a ball across and instead goes down softly, trying to draw contact. It's a goal kick to Brighton, despite Livramento's desire for a foul.

Brighton & Hove Albion vs Newcastle United

14:43

Murphy goes for a smart one-two with Guimaraes on the right before the latter's ball is cleared by Dunk at the near post. Adingra recovers and gets fouled by the Brazilian as this first half continues to prove tricky for the away side.

Brighton & Hove Albion vs Newcastle United

14:39

GUIMARAES! It's straight at the goalkeeper! Barnes rushes in from the left touchline to link up with Isak in the central position. The ball is then popped to Toons' Brazilian midfielder to power one from the edge of the area. It's a sighter, really, and Verbruggen can dive onto the ball gratefully. It is a sign of promise, though.

Brighton & Hove Albion vs Newcastle United

14:38

Newcastle win a corner as Van Hecke does well to interfere with a cross and nod over. The resulting delivery is ineffective and Brighton clear to break. This threat ultimately ends as Pope powers away as the crowd shout 'HOOF'.

Brighton & Hove Albion vs Newcastle United

14:36

Nonsense aside, going back to Minteh's strike: the Gambian has netted seven goals across all competitions for Brighton this season, with each of his last two now oddly coming against Newcastle United.

Brighton & Hove Albion vs Newcastle United

14:35

It appears that the yellow card has been attributed to Wieffer grabbing the ball in order to stop Newcastle moving forward quickly.

Brighton & Hove Albion vs Newcastle United

14:33

Brighton have a record of W10, D6, L2 when scoring the opening goal in the Premier League this season.

14:28

WILLOCK! The midfielder goes on a determined run down the left and gets all the way into the box before firing an effort just over Verbruggen's bar with the outside of his right foot. Close!

Brighton & Hove Albion vs Newcastle United

14:27

After a bit of time on the deck sees Livramento receive treatment as Minteh clipped his ankle, the player is up and free-kick is played short. The ball is launched out of play and the opportunity to go forward is wasted.

Brighton & Hove Albion vs Newcastle United

14:25

Minteh swings a lovely switch of play over to Adingra as Brighton look good going forward. The Ivorian skips inside from the left and finds Baleba, but the Cameroonian comically balloons his left-footed pass up and out of play on the left. Crikey. In the next phase, Livramento is fouled by Minteh, who sends the wing-back tumbling to the turf with a boisterous shove.

Brighton & Hove Albion vs Newcastle United

14:24

Brighton enjoy some solid possession, yet Newcastle are really sitting compactly. The Seagulls can only make so much progress before being forced backwards. When they do shove their way through, Wieffer is penalised for fouling Livramento on the right as the defender gets his body between ball and player nicely.

Brighton & Hove Albion vs Newcastle United

14:22

Isak, who has been quiet so far, tries to get involved by flicking a ball into the box for Willock. His runner, though, isn't running, and instead the ball rolls out of play for a goal kick. We need to see more from the Swede.

Brighton & Hove Albion vs Newcastle United

14:21

Barnes and Livramento link up down the left for the visitors, but the latter's cross is blocked by Van Hecke.

Brighton & Hove Albion vs Newcastle United

14:21

While the Minteh challenge from Burn threatened to add some more vigour to this fixture, we've yet to witness such so far.

Brighton & Hove Albion vs Newcastle United

14:18

Roars erupt now. Brighton build out after pressure from the Magpies. Minteh then touches the ball away from a lunging Burn on the right and gets wiped out. Somehow, the big Blythe man has escaped without a booking.

Brighton & Hove Albion vs Newcastle United

14:17

In the opening 15 minutes of this match, Newcastle have had seven touches in the opposition's box compared to Brighton's one.

Brighton & Hove Albion vs Newcastle United

14:16

Trippier slides in Murphy at the right byline as Newcastle knock at the door. Verbruggen tips out the low drive from that side, before another Murphy ball is lofted over and the Dutchman claims.

Brighton & Hove Albion vs Newcastle United

14:14

Burn rises for the corner delivery and whacks into O'Riley to give away a foul in the Seagulls' box. Up the other end, Baleba takes a punt from range that Willock blocks well.

Brighton & Hove Albion vs Newcastle United

14:13

Newcastle have Brighton chasing the ball before a long pass sees Wieffer and Van Hecke bump into each other. Barnes is through, but drags his effort across Verbruggen's goal from the left. It took a nick, and there'll be a corner on the right.

Brighton & Hove Albion vs Newcastle United

14:11

As this game's tempo continues to grow, it's worth mentioning Newcastle's form. Eddie Howe's side have won 19 Premier League matches this season and are looking to win 20 in a season for the first time since 2002-03 under Sir Bobby Robson (21). With this, Howe would also become the first English manager since Frank Lampard with Chelsea in 2019-20 to win 20 Premier League games in a season.

Brighton & Hove Albion vs Newcastle United

14:09

The 20-year-old Minteh is back up and ready to re-enter the play from the touchline. In the meantime, Murphy threatens on the right for Newcastle, yet Verbruggen claims a low cross well.

Brighton & Hove Albion vs Newcastle United

14:07

Minteh continues to show early promise here, yet is denied on the right. He quickly hits the deck after the skirmish. The problem seems to be a knock on his right knee.

Brighton & Hove Albion vs Newcastle United

14:06

Well, despite some topsy-turvy form this season, Brighton will be looking up at the European places as this game whirrs into life. In fact, Brighton are one of two sides in the Premier League this term who’ve both scored and conceded 55+ goals (56 for, 55 against), along with Spurs. Since losing 1-0 to Everton in January, each of their last 11 matches has seen at least three goals scored, with 45 in total (4.1 per game).

Brighton & Hove Albion vs Newcastle United

14:05

Minteh is slipped in by O'Riley on the right and looks to threaten his former club until Burn gallops over to deny the Gambian.

Brighton & Hove Albion vs Newcastle United

14:03

Tonali makes good early strides down the left and looks to be dispossessed by Baleba flying in. However, Barnes runs on to the loose ball down that flank and crosses, only for Verbruggen to claim confidently. Newcastle offer a formative warning sign.

Brighton & Hove Albion vs Newcastle United

14:02

And we're off on the south coast!

Brighton & Hove Albion vs Newcastle United

14:02

The captains, Dunk and Guimaraes, meet with Pawson in the centre. It looks as if Newcastle will get us off and underway, kicking from right to left.

Brighton & Hove Albion vs Newcastle United

14:01

The players are in the tunnel, ready to be led out by today's referee Craig Pawson. An important note: a Newcastle win today would be their first at Brighton in the top tier. While Brighton eye a move back into the European places, it would take the Magpies two points off second-place Arsenal.

Brighton & Hove Albion vs Newcastle United

13:46

Eddie Howe names an unchanged Newcastle eleven after an emphatic 3-0 win against Ipswich at St James' Park last time out. Striker Alexander Isak is looking to add to his 22 Premier League goals. While defensive trio Lewis Hall, Matt Targett and Jamaal Lascelles are unavailable, Fabian Schar starts his 179th Premier League game for the Magpies this afternoon, moving level with Steven Taylor for the seventh most by an outfielder for the club.

Brighton & Hove Albion vs Newcastle United

13:41

Brighton manager Fabio Hurzeler makes two changes following last weekend's 3-2 win against West Ham. Defender Jan Paul van Hecke returns after missing that victory with the head injury he sustained against Brentford, and Yankuba Minteh also comes in. Joao Pedro remains unavailable due to suspension after his dismissal against the Bees.

Two sides with European aspirations clash today, as Brighton welcome Newcastle United to the American Express Stadium. The Seagulls boosted their top-eight hopes by kicking off their final five league fixtures of the season with a 3-2 victory over West Ham last time out. The Magpies also enjoyed a productive afternoon in the North-East at the expense of Ipswich Town as they won 3-0. Currently, Brighton sit in 10th, well Newcastle continue well in the upper echelon in fourth. Brighton have already beaten Newcastle twice in all competitions this season, 1-0 in October’s reverse Premier League fixture and 2-1 in the FA Cup fifth round. The last side that won three games against the same team in a single campaign was Wycombe Wanderers in 2009-10, while Brighton have never beaten an opponent three times in a season as a top-flight side.
