BRIEF: Firefighters rescue worker dangling from cell tower

Dec. 05--Firefighters rescued a worker who was dangling from a cell phone tower in the Chatham neighborhood after slipping off a platform, officials said.

Two workers were doing maintenance on the tower at 77th and State streets near the Dan Ryan Expressway around 6:15 p.m. Thursday when one of them lost his footing, according to Fire Department spokesman Larry Langford.

The other worker alerted emergency responders as his partner, wearing a safety harness and gear, hung suspended 100 to 150 feet above ground, Langford said.

Firefighters responded with an aerial ladder rig.
