BRIEF: Verlon 'Rube' Walker's daughter hears his voice for the 1st time in memory

July 24--Two years ago, we ran a story by freelance reporter Emily Harris recounting the long quest of Leigh Ann Young of Charlotte, N.C. Her father, a baseball player and former Cubs coach, Verlon "Rube" Walker, had died when she was just 3. She figured, given his long professional sports career, somebody would have a recording and she could hear the voice she can't remember.

It wasn't easy, though she reached out to media stations and baseball teams across the country. At the time of the writing she still hadn't found a recording.

But there's now a happy (and somewhat surprising) ending. Keith Olbermann, who had long championed Young's search, recently announced the news on his show, complete with a recording. Young also writes about her long journey on her blog.

And just a thought: Maybe it's time to capture your own loved ones' voices on that video app on your smartphone.
